The ethernet cable goes from your Modem to your Router. Their is usually only 1 ethernet port on your modem, so thats easy to isolate. On the back of your Router the first port (going from left to right) is usually the "In" port, so plug your cable here. The "out" ports are usually the next 4 ports and this is where you connect other devices like, laptops, PC and Xbox 360's.
Its pretty universal in terms of set up.
