I heard from a friend that from February that XBOX live was going to be free. When I asked where he got this info from. One of his friends had phoned microsoft up to get a live account for a year and the dude on the other end of the line told him not to bother as it as going to be free.
Has anyone else heard this rumour.
I already have live upto July this year and was wondering would I get a refund or microsoft points for my remaining account.
xbox live makes way too much money to think this is true. i could see them cutting the price a little, even though it's already really reasonable. i wish it were true, but kind hard to believe.
This rumor has been around since I first got XBOX live (about 2-3 years ago) and it has never happened. I really doubt that it will happen. Think about it, if XBOX Live became free, then it would be like PSN which suffers from horrible connection problems and an overall worse experience. This is because Microsoft would be losing money if it attempted to host all of the game servers like it does now, so they would just stop doing it. That means that just like with the PSN, game developers would have to make their own servers for people to play on, which often results in more laggy games.

everything contained her is a complete lie and is 100 percent untrue.
Who really cares if PSN is free, Live costs 50 bucks, and will probably never change. The funny thing is, when people cry about the cost, it makes no sense. And before you jump on me about having mommy pay for my live, understand that I am married and have children. But if you really sit down and figure out how much it costs per hour that you play, it really is a very small price.
I don't care if PSN is free. It was just a rumour that Live was going to be free. I to am married with kids, have paid £40 (The price in England) and have not once complained. I do think its a reasonable price.........but would be even more reasonable for nothing.
I wouldn't big XBOX up that well on their so called great connection, as it still has a tendancy to drop at vital times (just when your about to get your best score ever etc.), but then again I've never been on the PSN.
I quickly googled it and back in 2007 Xbox Live went to 6 million users.
I dont know what it costs elsewhere but in uk its £40 for a year. Even if you assume half of these people brought the 12 months package that's like £120000000. That's an obscene amount of money for a company even as big as Microsoft to just drop. Although I would questoin what it costs to run the servers vs what they earn, perhaps thay can drop prices to make the live experience more accesable to more people. And only god knows what they earn now in 2009 after all of the console price drops and more people playing online.
concidering even with the money xbox live brings in, that the ms gaming devision just recently got out of the negative income category, im sure it has ALOT to do w/ the money that xbl brings in.
so... NO... it will never be free. that money helps us gamers out by giving MS extra cash to help make sure our experience is better. Otherwise, theyd be left like the sony crew. 1 broken paddle, swimming up river, with nothing but a scant few decent games and alot of **** talking instead of fixes.
Very true, I personally don't mind forking out £40 for it as it is worth every penny to me but I know of at least 4-5 people who wont get live because of the money. Cant help thinking that if they dropped their prices a little they would get many more people joining.
I agree with xxrpggamemanxx , I don't mind paying $50 a year for LIVE. It keeps the servers running smootly and you don't have 6 year olds ticking you off in serious games.
I mean really think about it, $50 a year = .14 cents a day. Where else are you going to find a deal this good to have this much fun?
I dont think Live will ever be free but as Sony is catching up and making their online service better and better, im sure MS will do something. Maybe slash the price to $25 a year, make achievements worth something etc etc.
