I have not been exploring this site for long but from what I have seen there are members that have played a lot of different shooters, and have some really creative ideas. I thought it would be fun to have a thread where we share ideas about what we would like to to see in a shooter game. Anything from settings, weapons, characters...or any element that you like or dislike.
As far as war setting shooters go there is the danger of upsetting some people because they are based on actual events. I am thinking about this issue now because I want to mentions some war shooter ideas but don't want to offend anyone...so please realize that this is a game and not intended to be politically linked at all. I think most of us will agree that WWII has been way overplayed. The US civil war has received very little attention. The first concern that comes up with the civil war is the weapons in this era were limited to handguns, rifles, swords, knives, bayonets, cannons, Gatling gun, mortar artillery, crude grenades, and probably others that I am not listing. This changes how the game could be designed considerably compared to most other shooters. Because of the strong knife and sword element I think it could be a 3rd person shooter with the ability to enter a first person mode when aiming a gun. Use of sword and knife fighting could be expanded so that the characters could engage in highly controlled knife and sword fights where dodging, parying, striking at different body parts, stabbing, punching, and fatalities could be executed. In such sequences the fighters could be injured if they were struck in the arm or leg and respond accordingly. For this element I am imagining an updated Bushido Blade Bushido Blade (video game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Because the rifles were single shot and the entire game would become more sniper like than run and gun. One shot one Kill would be emphasized because they are not automatic rifles, but they do have the ability to be quite accurate at a long distance. After every shot there would be a reload time but this could be unrealistically shortened for the sake of fun. The players would have to make use of their surroundings and think about cover and angles to avoid being shot, and so that they can get the angle on their opponent. There was the six shooter hand gun, so for closer combat that could be used. A little google research reveals that the advent of the repeating firearm did come about in this era. The Spencer repeating carbine was the most common used, it held 7 shots. Still it paid to be precise rather than reckless in this style of combat.
The setting could be amazing since this war occurred in a time revered in film but hardly touched in video games. Interesting architecture of homes and towns could be captured. Famous Battles such as Gettysburg and Shiloh could be recreated. I think the game would be better received if it remained historically accurate, however some may disagree.
Anyway, here is one idea. I am sure this community has plenty to offer and I look forward to reading your responses.
i'd like to see an extremely realistic shooter set in a real current war such as afghanistan, a shooter that's basically as close as you can get without actually being there. so far operation flashpoint has been a damn near perfect shooter for me but all the bugs and the fact that it's not a real war prevent it from being my perfect game. also i'd like a shooter where your AI team mates don't absolutely suck ass

Better AI is seems like a very reasonable request with today's gaming technology. What specifically would you want included for realism?
well it would be much slower paced for a start, more like real war, less run and gun. i've never been in a warzone so i don't know exactly what to say, but they should thoroughly research it before making the game to make it as realistic as possible, i'd love a shooter like that

I honestly don't think the civil war era would be that great, considering the weapons and such. Who knows, they could make it extremely arcadey and make it like the movie "The Patriot"
And I loved Bushido Blade man, I haven't heard that games name in a long time. I think an updated Bushido Blade lives in the Dynasty Warriors series, of course it's not 1 on 1 action, nor does it have the same game engine(or even anything similar) But it gets my samurai cravings down as I slay 1-2k people per battle ;D
I honestly think the next step up for first person shooters would probably be something integrated with project natal. Other than that I can't really think of any fresh new ideas for gameplay. Just storylines and game settings.

Not sure what project natal is, could you explain it?

basically....it's dumb. its brought to you buy the same people who mocked nintendo and its motion controls and called it gimicky, then basically copied the same idea, but without controls...that isn't gimicky at all.

same here.... I'd like a Rainbow Six with realistic damage. Shoot me in the leg and movement slows, hand or arm shot you may or may not be able to hold a gun steady or use one at all in that hand. And if not swat team like a rainbow game I'd certainly go for a war setting.
and if I do survive a shot, give me some kind of menu to pull up with a diagram of my body detailing the location and severity of the injury, or if I have body armor on show me which ceramic plates are now broken and useless. something like that. That would lead to really thinking about what equipment you'd stock before missions.
