Default Elder Scrolls I-III

Does Elder Scrolls IV follow a story line from the previous games? In other words, does one need to know the background story of the series in order to play Oblivion?

No. While they do exist in the same world they do not follow the same plot. They are seperate games.

Default ElderScrolls stuff

It's really a decent world. Here is a link to the official site with TONS of history and current info on the Elderscrolls world. http://www.elderscrolls.com/codex/history_redguard.htm The simple way to see the Elder Scrolls world is to think of it like the Roman Empire, there is a capital city in the central country, which has conquered far flung nations and had their govornmental officials assigned there and Imperial Legion troops in forts there to maintain peace and keep the tax money flowing back home. So elder scrolls 2 happens on one country.....elder scrolls 3 happen on the other side of the known world with different characters. and now elder scrolls 4 happens centuries after the last game with new characters. the whole theme used by Bethesda is recreation each time they make an Elder scrolls game and thats what I LOVE! I hate companies that just rehash old software and label it as new,
