Posts: 1,112 | yes, if both of you are on the router (xbox and xbox 360) then you can lan it together. I have done it MANY times with my friends with multiple xboxs and 360's.

I don't think you can use ethernet cables to connect xboxs. You need the link cables. And yes, as long as each xbox is playing on a different tv, you can use a router to share internet connection. I have also done this many times. |

Posts: 38 | No, The cable that came with the 360 will not work for connecting sytem to system. You need a crossover cable to do that. The official Microsoft Link cable is about $20. If you are going to use the one that came with the 360 you will need 1 other Ethernet cable and a Hub or Router.
There is a difference between a Ethernet cable and a Crossover Cable. They look the same, but the way the wires are set up in the R-J45(the plastic ends of the cable).

Originally Posted by TurkeyRap So the ethernet cable that came with 360 will work just fine? | No, as EDalienEN1 has already stated, the cable that came with the 360 is just a standard Ethernet cable. I was referring to the green Xbox system link cable that you can purchase for around $20-$25. That is really just an Ethernet crossover cable.
Just to clear up any confusion, a crossover cable is an Ethernet cable in which the receive and transmit lines (input and output) are crossed to allow two devices (such as Xboxes or PCs) to be networked together without a hub or switch in between them. Normally in a networked environment, a hub or switch performs the "crossing" of the send/receive transmit lines, so you can connect many devices together.
Now just in case you're wondering why you don't use a crossover cable to connect your cable or dsl modem directly to your Xbox... Devices like cable and dsl modems usually have their ethernet plugs reversed, so a standard Ethernet cable is all that's required to connect them to a PC/Xbox.

Posts: 902 | If you have a wireless adapter for your 360 then you should be fine. If the wireless router has a built-in switch (as many of them do) then you can connect to that as well with the Ethernet cable that came with the Xbox.

Posts: 119 | yea and just to let you know, buying a crossover cable wouldnt be a waste of money becuase you can use it as a regular straight-through cable (patch cable)
so basically you can use it for a system link, then after everybody goes home you can reconnect your xbox to your router with the same cable
*Off Subject*
I love my house because before they were done building it my dad went in and ran ethernet cables through the walls to network jacks in the living room, garage, office and my bedroom, so ill i have to do is plug the cable into the wall

But you certainly can't use it as a regular patch cable. They are two completely different functioning cables. Not to mention it would defeat the purpose of the crossover cable. Remember a crossover cable crosses the receive and transmit lines.
I think you're referring to the fact that many devices (routers, hubs, switches) have special ports, that can either autosense or be manually switched, to allow for either type of cable (standard or crossover) to be used. Some even have shared ports, which usually consist of an uplink port and a regular port, and you can use one or the other. Quote: |

That definitely comes in very handy to have the house wired for Ethernet.
