360 Live users and old xbox Live users

A friend of mine just got Live! but he doesn't have a 360. I was able to add him to my friends list but I can't voice chat with him. I get his voice messages but he doesn't get any of mine or my text ones. He also says that it shows nothing of me being online but I'm able to see that he's online and where he is.

Is there a problem or are "old" xbox Live! users and 360 users unable to chat and interact with each other? Is the software just too different with the 360 to interact with the old xbox?

Also, if I got on Halo 2 and he got on Halo 2 as well, would we be able to play in the same game or is that out of the question as well?

You can absolutely play old xboxes and halo on live. I do it just about everyday with clanmembers who have not got 360's yet. About the voive messages, I have no idea.

I just thought of something, while I did this, I was on my silver membership and had not renewed my gold membership. Could this have affected things?

you would not be able to sign into halo with a silver membership, you get a cannot connect start troubleshooter? prompt. It should not affect chat unless its an underage account and is set to no voice.

Damn live it always messes things up. Just like the dashboard when your download something and try to read your messages. Annoying that.

You cant send voice messages to people with the original xbox. It tells you this when you try to anyways. If your in halo 2 then you can use its own voice message features but not the 360's voice feature.
