The review writer.
They make or break a game, system or even genre.
Hands flip, mice click to the tune of every word phrase and statement.
The problem is, they are trusted too much. Too many reviews in X or Y magazine or website sway players from getting the great games, push them to getting the bad ones make them doubt their own ability to think for themselves.
What is written is not in stone, what is said is not gospel what is dictated is not embedded into history so all can follow with no regard to independent thought.
Dear reader. How may times have you burned a hole in your pocket over a game that was written as "The X killer" or the "Killer app for Y console"?
You plow through traffic trying to get it on day one, hand over the cash ditch the receipt confident on the fact that this title will end your gaming woes forever. At least for the next few months.
You put it in, and find that "Teh sexiest game ever!!1!one!eleven" actually isn’t. You play and play the game and no joy. None. Its horrible. Beyond the point of no return, still tooling over a title you knew from the time you thought to yourself "meh idunno..." that thing should not be spinning in your machine.
You knew better, but you wanted that fix so bad, you believed in what the writer said. "This game will without a doubt deliver with its stunning visuals, in-depth game play and amazing voice talent of Whodat Actors".
- who the f*censored*do you know says the word stunning.
Who says "visuals" who cares about voice talent? What’s so amazing about Nicholas Cage doing the voice of the Rabid Doberman Zombie?
Who’s fallen for it? I have. Regretted every moment of the titles that were hyped to my console too.
Many writers get the game for free. Many say the same thing the boxes say. Many writers blast through every level going around corners gun first, using the same play the same combo the same gaming loop hole to get to the end. Or worse yet, are told what to say.
You know the conspiracy.
Lets address this on the other side of the fence here.
Writers that blast through every level going around corners gun first, using the same play the same combo the same gaming loop hole to get to the end. Or worse yet, are told what to say don’t even take the time to absorb the game.
They say a game sucks because X or Y is missing. What the hell happened to story? I’m going on a tangent here - games are what you the p(L)ayer makes them. Your tastes should be the deciding factor.
Those in the stores, magazines or websites often get a paycheck for what they do.
I assure you a game that just came out will not have the information you want about it just yet. You looked on every site been to every forum and saw every screenshot of the game you want.
It’s probably an avatar, banner or lives on your wall paper. All they know about the game is all you know. Don’t bother asking. They wont know any more than you would except for the delivery date. The best person to ask is someone that has the game. Someone that bought the game.
Wait before you buy, and before then ask about it. Or, if its something you were waiting for, buy it. Rave or warn others determining what you got from the game.
Everyone’s taste in titles can be different, so our unsung hero the review writer is right there in front with gathered intel ready to give you the skinny on every title out there.
Keep in mind dear player, a review is based on a deadline. The game may have come for free or may even be incomplete. Before you use your cash do yoru research and wait. A game that’s crazy sexy now will be crazy sexy weeks later too, lest we forget.
Lest we forget dear writer, a game played through will have a different review than a game played thoroughly. Keep that in mind.
