Pricing

the Xbox 360 Core System does not have the 20GB hard drive. It simply includes the console, one standard wired controller, a face plate, and a standard AV cable. The Core System retails for US$299.

On the other hand, the Xbox 360 System features the 20GB hard drive, a wireless controller, faceplate, headset, component AV cable, an ethernet cable, and for a limited time, a remote. The Xbox 360 System retails for US399.

So lets value all the additional accessories you get as a result of purchasing the Xbox 360 System over the Core System:

- Hard drive = $99.99
- Wireless controller - $49.99 less $39.99 (Core System wired controller) = $10
- Headset = $19.99
- Component AV Cable = $39.99
- Ethernet Cable = $9.99*

All up that is an additional value of $178.97 if you purchase the Xbox 360 System, as opposed to getting the Core System, and then buying the addiitional accessories seperately.

What this means is that if you do see yourself buying the extra accessories that you get with the Xbox 360 System; only later down the track, you are effectively paying a premium to do so, and a fairly hefty one at that - nearly $80 (close to the difference between the 2 packages in the first place). So straight off the bat, the Xbox 360 System has a distinct advantage over the Core System in terms value.

Also, as I will discuss later, if you want to use Xbox Live you will need some sort of memory storage - whether it is the 20GB hard drive, or the 64MB memory unit (which retails for $39.99). This means even after purchasing the Core System, you will still have to pay another $40 to access Xbox Live*. In fact, the same can be said for saving games - if you buy the Core System and want to save games, you are going to have to pay another $40 minimum to get some sort of storage memory for your 360.

The only reason the Premium seems like such a good deal is because all the accessories are way overpriced.

any item that is sold in any sort of premium is way over priced if you buy it alone. that is for any company

i know...im just stating that they shouldn't have a "premium" and a "core", they should just sell the system w/ a hard drive and controller and sell everything else extra at REASONABLE PRICES

Microsoft is not the kind of company that likes to lose $1 Billion on any product, and they're just trying to make money, and this is the best way to do it. Reel the customer in with the $299 price point and then hook them for the $399.

It's that simple.

heh, the xbox360 premium pacage is cheap over in US.. i have to pay $500 for it here in Norway... I bet it's worth it though

The prenuim pack is £279.99 which is incredibly cheap for a console if I remember correctly the Xbox 1 was £399.99 am I right ? so why are you moaning about the price. ?

Microsoft is referred to as M$ for a reason. Most already know this an accept it. They are like any company, they are out to make a profit thats always the bottom line

you really need to stop saying this part about "left it as is" already mentioned once Microsoft NEVER announced a price until they did with the 2 packages. If YOU thought it was cheaper that was YOUR mistake. You really need to stop blaming the company as if they were lieing. They didn't lie because they never said anything. You bought into the idea of all the rumours floating around saying it would be 300 and that was it. Everyone knew it was a rumour and that it could and probably would turn out to not be true. First rumour afterall was that it would be $360 as a gemmick anyways so they actually weren't to far from that one. Sorry to nag but your really coming across as whining and your pointing your finger at the wrong people. They are crooks, but they didn't lie to you. You just believed unofficial information and you can't blame them for that and thats just life. I know it sucks and I'm really sorry that its hitting you with a higher price point then you wanted and I'm guessing that its made it not as affordable for you and I know it sucks. Nothing can be done about it now you just have to accept it or simply dont give them your money and dont buy it.

And actually a lot of the things they are selling are at reasonable prices. Trying buying hardware of comparable specs for a PC and you'll see truely unreasonable prices. Every system is expensive its first couple of years thats just how it is and always will be.

And yes the core package sucks especially in the eyes of any of us. However I have talked to normal casual gamers who are going for it, they dont play on live, they aren't using it for multimedia, they just want to throw in a game and play. Heck most of them dont even care about saving they play for fun (like say madden they'll play with there friends and thats it they dont care about franchises or careers) so each package will have a niche. Many members have said this and other great examples of people who would use that package and for a number of reasons. Just as J Allard said the core package is not even aimed at us hardcore gamers.

You are wrong - it was £299.99 at launch. Compare that to the $299.99 the US had to pay, and we got ripped off big time.

If us got the xbox for $299 they got it exstremely cheap
Here i had to pay over $500 for the xbox, and that was with one controller.. and that was it..
