Official GTA IV Impressions thread

The story is quite immersive and is what I expected from a GTA game but the game is not polished at all. There are major frame-rate problems, texture and geometry pop-in, some lighting issues and quite severe aliasing.

I would go as far as saying the graphics are those of last generation, just running in a higher resolution. Not impressive at all.

The gameplay makes up for it quite a bit but the game feels quite hollow right now, there just isn't enough to do (I am only a few missions in but I've played several hours online in free-roam).

Single player stories in games very rarely keep my attention for more than 5 seconds but I actually WANT to proceed in this one. It has to be something special for it to do that for me and for that reason it gets 10/10. And remember, this is just a preliminary score.

The GTA arc is a slightly altered duplication of nearly every prior installment; gratuitous violence combined with stereotypical "mafioso" altercations and habitual use of profanity. The story line provided the gamer with nothing we haven't seen or read before. However, this does not mean the story quality is not palatable. I feel it does a decent job at maintaining the gamers interest although I've seen more depth and intrigue on porn pamphlets flying around the Vegas streets.

I agree with Scottie that the graphics are weak as hell, but 5/10 is a bit harsh. I'd say 7/10. Story I'd also give 7/10, because it's not holding my interest at all.

The graphics may not be stunning in the close up, in your face manner, but look at the amount of crap on screen that does have some amount of detail. I am sure the stuff that you focus on mainly would be a lot nicer if a lot of the background stuff was gone.

i agree with Blaster. like i said earlier, it's not going to rival COD4 and other games with amazing detail, but there is a ton of stuff on screen, background and foreground. and comparing it to last-gen games for graphics is absurd. but there are several shots and landscapes that look really beautiful.

i'm not sure what Kona was expecting in terms of storyline, a love story? it's GT-friggin-A. everybody knows there is gonna be gratuitous violence and sex and profanity. maybe you're just fed up with the mafia aspect of it. that's understandable. and maybe some people have gotten turned off a little by too much mp too soon.

Well no ****ing **** Jasper! I was only proving my point that the story line doesn't merit a 10. Furthermore, it is a love story because I've been banging Michelle ever since I met her. Just take her to a restaurant and she puts out like a vending machine.

I dont know why everyone is slating the graphics, I personally think the attention to detail is stunning and they are good next gen graphics. Not out of this world ,but good enough.

i've played a bit online, it's pretty cool, my problem is the map is soooo big i spend most of my time driving around looking for where to go. theres diff. modes, like delivering drugs to certain places and cars. then theres a couple of kinda campaign missions you can do. oh, and theres races. and the obvious deathmatch/team deathmatch. and turf war, where you have to aquire turf by standing in certain areas for a bit. i found it a nice break from the campaign every now and again. all in all its fun, and well thought out.
