You just need to press the guide button again to completely back out of it and get back to the game.

Why couldnt someone have told me that sometime in the last year. Will that work anytime you goto the guide in game, such as accepting a private chat or going in to mute the 10 year old that wont shut up?

Achievements are to me a waste, what do you get out of it except a few points to show off to people as well as gaming progress, which is probably the only good feature with achievements and gamerscores. Sony have at least done something to make their achievements worth getting within Home.
