Posts: 5,094 | DP for the win. I know it may not make sense but scientists believe global warming will induce a global cooling. The melting of the polar ice caps will decrease the Atlantic temperature circulatory stream (North Atlantic Current) or something to that effect. They state this could dramatically change the climate especially all northern countries / continents. I never said I believed the **** that's just what most scientists who jumped on the Global Warming Bandwagon have said. |

Posts: 3,238 | They were talking about global cooling 30 years ago, now its about warming, which is more evidence that these so called "scientists" don't know what they are talking about. Everything is built upon models and not scientific evidence. We've been monitoring the climate for maybe 100 years on a planet that has been around for 4,500,000,000 years. How could you possibly understand something so complex when you've studied it for less than a geologic "blink of an eye"? Meanwhile these alarmist kooks have us constraining economic growth while developing a ridiculous cottage industry. These same morons run ads on my local TV telling me I need to conserve water when I live on the largest fresh water lake system in the world. You might as well tell an Iowan to conserve corn FFS.

I never said I believed the **** that's just what most scientists who jumped on the Global Warming Bandwagon have said. | I was studying this last term. What happens is the increase in temperature increases the rate/level of evaporation from the earth's water systems which then causes increased cloud levels. Clouds, being white reflect UV radiation from the sun which in turn reduces the average world temperature. Of course, anyone with 1/100th of a brain (and maybe even Shane) can deduce that this is cyclic because, as the temperature falls again the rate of evaporation decreases and the earth will then heat up again....
OH LOOK, FLUCTUATIONS IN THE EARTH'S TEMPERATURE HAVE BEEN HAPPENING SINCE WE STARTING RECORDING THEM. ****ing-A. Quote: |

Meh, we've analysed well more than 100 years (more like 100,000 years) but yeah, you're right. |

Was it homo sapiens or cro magnon that first made records of global temperatures, barometric pressures, jet streams, CO2 levels, solar cycles, the ozone layer and the Van Allen belts?

Sure, they are crude by today's standards of measurement but they must count for something since they offer a valid comparison (i.e. same test conditions) for times before records began. |

The Antarctic Ice Sheet covers roughly 15 million kilometers. Combined, there is approximately 30 million kilometers of ice pack on the planet earth when various other Ice Sheets such as the Greenland and West Antarctic are included. Obviously this is an enormous amount of ice sheets in climates which are extreme to say the least. It has been scientifically observed that the albedo of each cap is decreasing which simply put means these ice sheets are reflecting less UV energy while absorbing much more. It doesn’t take a physicist to deduce that greater UV absorption will accelerate the evaporation and melting of said sheets. When these sheets melt, however so slight, they then move forward and begin the process of Thermohaline Circulation, something I’m sure you are familiar with Scott. This process circulates water from as far north as Greenland to as far south as New Zealand. It is an extremely important function in maintaining the earth’s climate globally. Because these Ice Sheets are predominately fresh water, they are then circulated in the salty oceans. For the most part, partial melts have very little effect on our immediate climate but it is hypothetically plausible that a dramatic influx in severely cold fresh water could alter or halt the Thermohaline Circulation altogether. This would be catastrophic.
My issue is simple, many in the scientific community place blame on mankind for the melting of the precious caps. There is a lack of any substantiated evidence that would lead me to believe we have anything to do with it. For all humankind knows, it could all be a natural occurrence or it could be Ed and the ****ing Hummer he drives. The bottom line is the scientific data is there but alone it is not definitive. Some want us to take blame while others, like me, don’t really give a **** but do acknowledge something is going on. If one were to ask me, I’d have to say Global Warming is a farce utilized as a scare tactic to drum up support for politicians on both sides of the aisle, albeit one side more than the other. Until I am provided with irrefutable evidence which proves beyond a reasonable doubt we are at fault, I’ll be burning fuel, keeping my Plasma TV on at night and using incandescent light bulbs so I can see the refrigerator in my garage at night. |

Posts: 2,464 | that is why we all need to switch to bio fuel! it's soooo great! Now, instead of gas being at a high price, all of our food is because farmers have to pay so damn much more to feed their livestock! Woot! And, food we could be giving to all these countries in need, will now go into our gastanks, while the government still pays farmers NOT to produce crops! It just makes so much sense. i want to run out right now and buy a car with that little piece of wheat on the side to show my support for saving the earth! |

I'm with you Joel, but when gas went up the the astonishing price of $2/gallon 2 years ago, I traded in my 4x4 and full sized sedan for a compact car.
Through core sampling that Scott mentioned we know that the Carboniferous period was hot and the atmosphere had high levels of CO2. This was the period that gave us the coal we use today. Modern theory suggests that reintroducing this carbon into the atmosphere will again raise temperatures, but I don't necessarily feel there is a direct cause and effect relationship. There are too many factors that come into play that we cannot possibly measure retroactively such as solar activity or the effect upon the tides and oceanic circulation that a moon that orbited much closer to earth could have played. My argument is that it is a such a complicated issue that altering our lifestyles, slowing progress and dumping billions and trillions on something that is not much more than conjecture is ludicrous. I love nature and the outdoors and I don't do anything that I feel would be detrimental, but if I want an incandescent light bulb I'm gonna ****ing use one. We can enact these ridiculous protocols like Kyoto that penalize established nations while giving carte blanche to nations like India and China, yet at the end of the day there will be another ice age within the next 10,000-30,000 years and my beloved Cleveland Browns stadium will be buried under 3 miles of glacier (we may have a Super Bowl win by then).
I coming off a business dinner and I'm too drunk to proofread, so **** you pedantics in advance.

Posts: 5,094 | I agree. I did say it is scientifically plausible but this doesn't mean it will happen. Nature if far too abstruse for us to fully comprehend. From the Himalayan Mountains forming monsoons to the incredibly complex nature of the coral reefs, we are noobs in the grand scheme of things. By far the worse scam which has gained momentum ever since Global Warming has been utilized to scare people is the "Carbon Offset" movement. Lastly, I could give a **** about coal, I'm all for nuclear reactors. More efficient, cost effective, and "environmentally friendly". | | |
