Ok since the "Rate the Last Movie You've Seen" thread has taken off, why not have a thread that suggests what movies one must see before they die?
The point of the thread is for people to name movies that can be a considered a classic and by doing so help create an ever-growing list that shows people what movies they should definitely see (like a list to look over before going to rent a movie or something). Each movie that a person names must have 3 different people give it a stamp of approval in order to be a classic and thus be added to "The List" (which I will update after the approvals are made).
Limit naming the movies to 2 per post. No double posts, but you can list two more movies after someone else posts. No renaming of already named movies (let's keep the list growing). Don't name entire movie series or trilogies (i.e. don't say "all the James Bonds" or "all the Star Wars". Name individual movies. Also let's be serious, don't say something like Gigli or Patch Adams as a classic.
Also the movies listed in the classics list are now a link to their own IMDB page. This will allow those interested in knowing more about a movie the ability to do just that.
Godfather 1 & 2 (3 was garbage)
Saving Private Ryan
Star Wars 3,4,5
Highlander, The Warriors and Predator as "must see movies"???? Uggg....
How are you supposed to build a list if we can only agree with movies that were mentioned before? Seems like we're locked in with the handful of good titles mentioned so far. We can vote on a movie like Predator, but we can't mention important, quality, culturally relevant titles like Citizen Kane, On the Waterfront, The Manchurian Candidate (original), American Graffiti, Taxi Driver, just to name a few???? Those are the ones to see before you leave this world.

Sorry I didn't know that I had to list the same old movies that everyone does. A movie doesn't have to be heralded by AFI to be a must see movie. In that case then no action or horror movie can be on this list ever since AFI doesn't say so.

No one said they weren't good movies. I enjoyed them myself, but to say they are ones you must see in your lifetime is nonsense. They are not exactly the zenith of 100 years of filmmaking. The term "B-movies" was created for these types of films. That's not a bad thing nor a good thing; rather it is what it is.
I'm sorry, but I don't see how you could possibly consider Highlander, Predator or The Warriors to be anything but classic. They've all vastly contributed to our culture in more ways than enough and although they may not be considered classic in a conventional sense, that doesn't mean that they aren't classic in an unconventional sense. Highlander was an absolutely fantastic concept executed flawlessly. Predator took the overused sci-fi concept and gave it a lick of fresh paint by using a jungle setting involving guerrila soldiers and mercenaries, the latter of which spent almost the entirety of the film in a battle of wits with a creature immeasurably superior to them, yet they manage to overcome it. The Warriors would have been absolutely huge had it not have been banned so early after its release. The haunting but neo soundtrack, the whole aspect of completely over-the-top gang warfare which had subtle elements of social commentary, the contrasting personalities of each of the characters and the absolutely brilliant direction and design of the characters. These are all must-see films and although you may not agree with them, this thread isn't merely about your opinion on films. We were asked to list films which we think people should see before they die, and we did.
The Warriors was actually a last minute decision because Requiem for a Dream had already been done, however, I stand by it. If you pay close attention to the film itself, you realize just how excellent it really is. By your logic films like Pi, They Live, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China and Evil Dead 2 wouldn't make it on the list. I'm sorry but I gotta disagree.

Thank you my friend......................
Let's try to think outside of just the ones that are one the AFI top 100 list here people. If you are trying to recreate that list it has already been done.
I second Warriors (it's a modern telling of the Oddessy)

Yes, and it's not merely about your opinions, either. For instance, Predator is rife bad acting and an entirely predictable plot. If you're going to recommend an Arnold movie, why not T2, which was the first to make CGI mainstream, and was made to much better standards? Do I watch these movies? Yes. I own Highlander, and I have a copy of Predator that has been MIA for years. When you're on your death bed, I'll put on The Warriors for you, but for anyone else, I'd recommend Schindler's List, Planet of the Apes (original version), Blood Diamond, or scores and scores of other films that demonstrate quality in cinema.
Edit: It's much like saying a game is worth renting, but not buying. Its good entertainment, but not the epitome of quality.
