Default 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics Discussion

So with the Summer Olympics starting last night in Beijing, China I just wanted to start a new thread to discuss all of the happenings, I will also update here with each country's total number of gold medals won.

For now what events are you guys looking forward to the most? For me it's definatly soccer and basketball, I'm sure there are some cool smaller events (pole-vaulting, skeet shooting, fencing, etc.) that I may get into; the wife will make me watch all the gymnastics no doubt! SAVE ME ... ...

yea, what a great match.

womens gymnastics needs some help though. Shaun was solid, but everyone else including nastia went out of bounds or fell of the damn bars (nastia fell down on her landing of all things!)

there is horrid anti US setiment going on with the judges. this is the most openly biased set of events i think ive ever seen. I constantly watch the chineese divers and such making major mistakes with little conciquence and the americans getting full deductions for nothing..
syncronized diving for instance:
the 2 chineese divers had completely different hand positions (one totally in dive position, ones still at their waste) and got no deductions and even got afew perfect 10 scores.
up next, the americans which from what i could see, were as close to perfect as it got.. and they got 8.5s and like 1 or 2 9's.

from what my wife tells me, they did the same thing today during the mens syncronized diving.. even with major mistakes, china = 10, all else is atleast a point behind even without mistakes.

I noticed this as well, especially in the mens gymnastics tonight. Chinese gymnasts stepping out of bounds and still scoring higher execution scores than Americans that had no mistakes. Olympic judges are always a ****ing joke.

weren't they talking about this on the broadcast last night. i heard the announcers complaining that the judges were doing something with a replay and it was completely ridiculous. Thats bs. judge the games fair and award a winner. just cause china payed eleventy billion dollars doesn't ensure golds.

well... apparently it does UM. I have seen china make major mistakes and walk away with 9.5's and 10's and others get what i could see as a near perfect routine and struggle for 9s

the one lil 10 yr old chineese gymnast girl had her coach catch her like 4 different times on the double bars, and she still walked away with minimal deductions.

did you catch male weight lifting today, clean sweep or watever. The chinese guy lifted 195 kg to take first, the french guy had 2 attempts to lift 197 for the gold... he tried to pick up the first one and failed, 2nd attempt he walked up to the bar sat for about 30 seconds and without even attempting conceded and said he could not do it. is this standard for this type of event... i just thought it was weird that anyone in the olympics would concede gold without even attempting the event.
