Posts: 723 | Ok, I know I posted already, but after what I just saw, I feel this is needed.
I just saw G4TV's special on violent video games. Both sides have arguments, but neither one has complete proof on weather violent games create violent people. Unfortunately, as said in the show, many people want an easy way out. That way is video games right now. Now, IMO, this is partly true, but even when it is true, it's not the games or developers who are really at fault. Parents don't let 10 year olds watch movies like American Psycho or Doom because of the rating and they are violent and can have an effect on them. Now, games can have the same effect, but parents GIVE children mature rated video games without looking at the rating. This seems to be a problem on parents not understanding ratings. All kids are brought up differently, and have different personalities, so the parents will know best what there child or children can handle. Yet, parents dismiss the ratings, give extremely violent games to children, who shouldn't play them, and blame the developers for the after effects! I do not see any way how developers are at fault in this situation, and it;s the most common situation that happens.
On the show, they had a surviver from Columbine who's sister was killed unfortunately. He even has a better view of these things. He says that no, it's not video games that caused them to do what they did, but it had an impact. Yes, all games have an impact on people, but not to the extent of creating murders. So, what I got from him is that it had a MARGINAL effect on the shooters, and that it was NOT the cause. Parents are expecting things to be done for them because of technology, well it doesn't work like that. I play violent games all the time, the effect it has on me is stress release and a form of anger management. But that is me, not someone else! By all means, if games do what so many people think they do, I would have murdered multiple people by now, been in jail, and probably executed.
So, why don't parents pay attention to the ratings, I have no idea. I know my mother did, I missed out on some games when I was younger, but at the same time, I am glad she did it now. Same with movies, I wanted to watch Seven when I was 11, but she refused to let me until I was 17. Now I understand why. So where is the problem, I seriously thing that it's with the parents and other consumers who seem to ignore the most impotent things on the boxes, the rating. They are there to help and guide you to know what is in the game, as well as make an educated decision on weather or not the game is approved for the player.

But if I may be so bold as to point out that there are studies of teen violence going back to the mid 1850's... this is not a new thing here. If you look at the numbers, teen violence has actually been DECREASING every year for the past 20 years. Could it be that video games are an outlet that prevent some from doing something they'll regret? Possibly... I don't know, but the media has a big part in the problem saying "Oh God. Kids are killing eachother everywhere and all the time" blah blah blah... I don't buy it.

Posts: 969 | no, but i also watched the G4 special. People who play games and start thinking about killing people is sick minded. Games are to have fun and release stress. Be on that, is wrong if your planning to give physical harm from a game.

Posts: 0 | Violent games? well it depends on what kind of violent games. Some people with mental problems said video games made them kill their clasmates, friends, etc. I remember a story in Uk (i think) when a mother tried to banned the sell of Manhunt, she said her son died because of that game. Im my case, i take all my stress on video games, fighting games with gore and realistic blood makes you beat the character in the video game, not in your school. That also why i think the popular series GTA are so popular, because people can do things in real life cant. So violent video games doesnt make you do it, a normal person dont toast somebody with a flamethrower, a normal person doesnt take the eyes of a person of out the eye sockets, a normal person doesnt kill cops |
