Posts: 575 | Oooo, side note. I just got done watching a PSP commercial. Who comes up with this crap? Heres the plan gentlemen. Two hispanic dust balls are in a room. One asks the other what he is doing, he says "hey man, I'm watching carpet" in a stereotype hispanic voice. Next have the other mexican dust ball say "you can do that outside!" Perfect! Wait there is still more. Now I want to throw in some very tired possibly high guy to say, . . . you ready for this? "PSP, its like watching carpet outside"....*waits for applause* So what do you think gentlemen, sounds great doesnt it?
Sorry, I just couldnt picture that passing any type of marketing person and them giving the green light.
And who wants to watch carpet? Not alone outside. LAME.

That would be pretty ill
It'll be like a gaming Palm Pilot.

Thats a hell of alot for such simple games with pityful graphics and sound. Which are both terribly important to me. As for metroid Prime.....$62.75. Sorry but that is more expensive that a Xbox 360 game across your way. So indeed I was correct. Take more time to read what people say. Just think, a 360 game across here costs $89.66 EACH! So you should feel lucky. Also the console costs $502, alot more than it does in the US. |

It'll be like a gaming Palm Pilot. | You are absoulutely right and Scot, that's a hell of alot of money for the U.S. About $90:00 for a 360 game? Dawg, i wonder what Canada is like. Lets ask Taylor.

It's nice to be King of the Office for once. The moment the Nintendo DS Lite hit Japan a couple months ago, the system has been the talk of the editors at IGN: "Hey Craig, when are we getting the DS Lite? When's the system coming to the US? How much can I get it at EB for? What colors can I buy it in? Can I have one of yours?"
That last part is what I've been hearing the most. Since I cover the DS full-time, I didn't hesitate to put in the order for the Japanese units when they were made available back in March of this year. Unfortunately, due to limited supplies of the DS Lite on top of the fact that the original Nintendo DS system had been sold out in that territory since the beginning of the year it took several weeks after the launch to get my systems in. When I did, though, hooboy I became everyone's friend.
Craig Harris is the Editor-in-Chief of the DS channel on IGN.
Let's look at why. The Nintendo DS was a very capable system, but it wasn't exactly pretty. The original unit's a bit bulky for portable standards, especially sitting next to past Nintendo handhelds like the Game Boy Advance SP and Game Boy Micro - compared to those two units, the original Nintendo DS is a gaming monstrosity. Most of all, when it's sitting next to the PSP, there's no way the Nintendo DS could win a beauty contest - its creation was more for function than fashion.
On top of all this, the screen technology the company used for the original units was, even at the time of its release, questionable - the two displays were backlit but not very bright, and because the two screens are viewed at different angles one always appeared darker than the other. Also, when the PSP shipped, its bright, detailed, and huge screen just made the Nintendo DS look much more no-frills.
To be fair, at the time of the Nintendo's release, the company went with a system design that's cost-effective and profitable, as well as possible to manufacture. It's hard to say if Nintendo had better screen choices available to them at a slightly higher price, but they were at least functional for what the company wanted to do with the system. The components inside a handheld system usually dictate the shell that goes around it, and at the time of the system's creation the Nintendo DS's design, apart from a few aesthetic curves and angles, was built that size and weight to house everything inside.
Let's also not forget that the Nintendo DS was also a risk for the company - though Nintendo will play the "we're not surprised that the system's a success" attitude, I'll put money down that the executives in that company were quite nervous about the product, especially since it was sending a second portable systems to a market the company was already dominating. That's the reason the company held that public "the DS is a Third Pillar product" belief - if the DS failed, it still had its Game Boy line to fall back on.
Obviously, the Nintendo DS was not a failure. And its success dictated that Nintendo could afford to take another look at the internal design to tighten up and lighten up the system for its "next generation." That tighter and lighter form is the Nintendo DS Lite, and the company has succeeded in giving its "Third Pillar" system a much-needed facelift to really give the PSP a run for its money in that beauty contest. In just a couple more days, the American public will experience the Nintendo DS Lite's beauty for itself.
The changes are evident right when you open up the package - the casing is almost half the thickness of the original Nintendo DS, and in fact, when both systems are closed the DS Lite's is only as thick as the lower half of the original unit. The DS Lite has also been lightened up in weight, though this isn't quite as evident when it's closed. Open it up, however, and that familiar "top heavy" feel of the original system is almost completely gone - most of the weight of the DS Lite is placed in the lower half...in the hands where it belongs. The stock stylus of the DS Lite is also a meatier unit and makes the original Nintendo DS system's pointer feel like a toothpick in comparison.
Overall, the unit looks sleek and sexy, and clearly has been inspired by the neutral sleekness of Apple's own iPod MP3 unit. Even the color is a play off of the original Apple creation - Nintendo even goes as far as surrounding the unit in clear plastic to protect the color underneath. Previous handheld system colors have had paintjobs surrounding the plastic, which tend to scratch and/or rub off with extended use.
But then we get to the biggest change of all: the DS Lite's namesake isn't exclusively attached to its size and weight. "Lite" also refers to the new LCD screens that are utilized - and holy crap are these suckers bright. The new screens strut their stuff right on the first power-up, but by default they're not kicking out the brightness on the highest setting - a couple of taps on the "sun" icon on the lower left of the bottom screen and you've bumped it up to a brightness that could blind a cat if you're not careful. Not really, but…man, these screens rock.
There hasn't been any compromise in quality to pump up the system to the new display. Colors are vibrant and the contrast is perfect - in fact, games that were too dark on the original DS, like Metroid Prime Hunters, are highly recommended DS Lite games because all of the details stand out with the new LCDs.
Honestly, everything about the system redesign has been addressed - the only real hindrance in the move to shrink the system is the GBA port. On the DS Lite, GBA cartridges stick out about a centimeter, similar to how the original Game Boy carts stick out of a Game Boy Advance unit. On a regular Nintendo DS, the carts sit flush in the slot, so to combat this Nintendo has included a neutral "cap" to fill the slot when it's not in use. This isn't to protect the slot as it is to keep the system looking sexy. Admittedly, the company could have used this opportunity to have the cap function as something else - a rumble pak, perhaps.
The system's been so well thought out and designed that it's almost impossible to go back to the original Nintendo DS system. Scratch that: it is impossible. I can't imagine anyone who was faced with the choice of having the Nintendo DS or DS Lite going for the original design…even if it was offered at a smaller price. I also won't be surprised if the original Nintendo DS simply faded away into gaming history - I don't believe Nintendo will be remanufacturing any more of the original units. All that'll be left are the stock left in the backrooms of Electronics Boutique and Wal-Mart.
The unit officially releases on Sunday, June 11th in the US, but some retailers have jumped the gun and started selling them early. If you haven't already gotten on board early with a pre-purchase or an advanced purchase at the premature releasing retailers, it's not long now to see how well received the unit will be in North America. Even if you have an original Nintendo DS, it's time for an upgrade; you won't regret it.
