I mean WTF, i thought it was going to be called the Revolution? well itsnt this just like nintendo i mean wasnt the gamecube going to be called the Dolphine or something like that?

Heh, well, all phalic jokes aside, yes, it very may well go down as the worst console name in history.

And yes, the Gamecube was known as the Dolphin while in its development stage, just as the Wii was known as the Revolution during it's development phase. Too bad, Revolution would probably would have gone down as the best console name in history.

Very true Grind, the name "Revolution" would've been teh ("the" misspelled on purpose) pwnerzorz. Wii is more meh. And I'm pretty sure Grind said this before, but it's pretty obvious it's just a pr stunt, because the Wii did get lots of attention after the name change. Other than that I can't see any other reason why you would change from a great name to a name you make fun of and joke about...

I happen to like the name wii. I think its great. It short, its fun and it suits the color/look of the console. sort of like an ipod suits the ipod even though the name without the device is stupid. revolution sounds tacky like they're trying to hard to appeal to the wrong crowds. Nintendo wants a family console and wii suits the system as apposed to the revolution. can you imagine some guys parents saying"honey, i think we should get a revolution?" I can see them saying "honey, lets get a wii for our wee little boy!" see? makes sense!

well xbox, its a box with an x on it whats not to understand. and who knows the could have ment the x to mean x-tream. i just dont get Wii, i mean wtf i think revolution was a much better name.

i like Wii good name, and of course where its made in japan it doesnt sound like the word for taking a piss!.
xbox is worse but the 360 is good much better then '2'

I like the name 'Wii". I didn't like it at first but it has grown on me. In my opinion I think that is good that Nintendo are trying to invent new names for their consoles, instead of being unimaginative and adding a few numbers on the end * Looks at Playstation 3*
If you can be mature enough to get over the jokes about the name then you wont have a problem with it at all.

The problem, Liam, is the name itself. The connotation of "wee" was established well before the Nintendo "Wii" came out (regardless of spelling, as the pronounciation as equal). So when people say that thier Wii has grown on them, I can' t help but snicker since my Wii grows on me too -- and every morning I have to beat it down so I can go to work. lest I make a scene.

Sure, we'll eventually get over the name, but I think that once it launches, public will also get to know the "wii" and we'll probably have to go through this whole ordeal all over again -- if I were in the porn industry, you could bet your bottom dollar I'd work the Wii in.

So, regardless of how unimaginative "PS3" may sound/appear, it isn't going to be associated with a phalic anytime soon. And even if it were, well, "your Wii is smaller than my PS3" would be the innuendo's that followed. Just in case, however, I'll get a black Wii...

the only thing i think that is going to be nice is nintendo has decided not to go into the price fight of the 360 or ps3. from what i read the nintendo "wii" (i hate the name) will be much cheaper than both of the other systems. also it will have internet on it, and a nice set of downloadable gamed from the old sega systems. so all in all the name doesnt matter i guess its all in the hardwear.

Hmm, I think you mean software, as the hardware specs that have been rumored in the Wii are subpar. And yes, it supposedly has Wi-Fi built for online play, 24/7.

This is how the name came to be...

The team had spent weeks and months trying to come up with a name for Nintendo's new console and they couldnt come up with anything that fit the graphics and gameplay. After coming back from the restroom one morning, Dave, said and Im quoting "I got it, it just came to me when I was taking a p*ss" After much debate that p*ss wouldnt fit the console they went with the more family friendly name the "Wii".

I know there are no guys in Asia named Dave and the graphics and gameplay are going to be great so dont flame me.

Although this is mainly an Xbox site,and unlike some fanboy sites, we do cover other consoles as well.
