Posts: 2,441 | how exactly are all signs pointing at blue ray? HDDVD is cheaper, so far the clarity is better, the PS3 isnt flying off the shelves like they thought it would..

WRONG! This format war just got a little more complicated: Slashdot | Adult Film Industry Chooses HD-DVD
Blu-Ray has officially snubbed the porn industry. HD-DVD is welcoming it with open arms (among other things). Now you could argue that the porn industry does not need Blu-Ray nor HD-DVD as online is the way to go. However, last year, just over $24 billion was spent on Dvds, and under $5 billion of that was attributed to porn.
Also, although it can be downloaded, you're still eating up lots of gigs to do so, but even still, not all porn advocates are internet literate (gasp!). Nonetheless, you can not dismiss the fact that those who bought an HDtv do not want to watch porn in high definition. And since that porn will not becoming to their HDtv via Blu-Ray, you can bet it'll keep HD-DVD around for a long time.
It's VHS v. Beta all over again. |

Hmm, the porn industry was indicating it's approval for Blu-ray but if it's benefactors don't want it...all the better for HD DVD.
I honestly don't care which wins but there are more Blu-ray players on the market than HD DVD and there are more Blu-ray releases for this coming year. Also, 96% of the HD market in Japan is Blu-ray...this all points in Blu-rays favour.
On-demand is the way forward for pornography and most media services so I doubt the porn industry going for HD DVD being that big a parameter in the battle for optical formats as internet connections are improving day after day.
Even if the PS3 sells 50% of what the PS2 did, that's still 50 million Blu-ray players (which is also the best one available, according to reviews) in consumers homes. Right now there are around 1 million PS3's sold and there are only 92k HD DVD add-ons sold. Blu-ray has outsold HD DVD by a massive amount already even with it's higher price point and fewer movies. And think, the PS3 hasn't even been released in the biggest market yet... |

Posts: 2,441 | you keep only comparing the ps3 to the 360 ADDON when you talk blueray vs hddvd. find the numbers for the stand alone units and add them in to be fair. Who cares how many ps3s have been sold? Most ps3 owners DONT HAVE A NEED FOR IT. The movie companies know this, and i doubt they are putting as much stock into the ps3's use as a player as you are at the moment. If the purchaser doesnt have a hdtv, they are not going to buy $40 blueray movies. Assume the % for the ps3 users is the same for the % of 360 owners who bought the addon.. In that case, the 360 wins hands down.. hell, double it for the ps3, and HDDVD still wins. Most people did not buy a ps3 for the blueray capabilities to play movies, so the point is mute. Sony owns multiple movie studios, thats why their movies are comming out faster. They dont have to wait for the rights to certain movies that they own, unlike the HDDVD.
HDDVD is cheaper to buy, better quality movies so far, and the movies are cheaper to buy. I dont put alot of stock in Blueray outside of the PS3. I think you are looking at another UMD style device in the end.
What is the numbers on stand alone units sold for both? that is a much better indicator.

Most people probably just aren't going to shell out $40 for a movie PERIOD. I mean this is just the beginning for HD anyway. I remember back in like 1999 I was living in London, England and people were still buying VHS tapes, DVDs were as scarce as HDDVDs and Bluray discs in stores. And this is the United States. I dont know what the situation is in most of Europe but friends in eastern europe are just now starting to hear about things like HD, it really is a luxury at this point in time.
Well, back to PS3, I think that it has potential and being a PS1 and PS2 owner maybe one day a PS3 will make its way to my house; however since I dont even have a 360 yet, Im prolly goin for the 360 first. I mean in the end the games on both systems are going to be pretty much the same (well except for exclusives like God of War or GT on the PS3), just the graphics might get a bit better on the PS3 overtime if the developers get used to the PS3 devkits. OR possibly the 360 if there is a new revamped version with better CPUs and GPUs. |
