Default PS3's Home and the New Future

So by now I bet you all have heard and saw Sony's new feature and if not then you can find a montage of what was presented here PlayStation 3 - GDC 07 Home Trailer .

Now when I saw this I had to applaude Sony for acclerating the online market (even though it may not be original by any means, à la Second Life) for bringing it to the consoles. Now I'm not going crazy over customizing my room with fake furniture where my avatar can sit there chatting to someone, but I do see the future and where it can go, though to expect any of this to happen in this generation of consoles would be far off (what I have planned is probably at least two more console generations away, and more like three).

This whole Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD format war will be the last format war as downloading will become the future and will catch on faster than any other format before it. But how can it catch on? When we find ways to download at speeds of Gigabytes of information in an affordable way adn this could be done in probably 12-15 years.

Alright so now we are all able to download full-length movies in 10 seconds so what does this mean for consoles? Well I predict Home is on the way for people to buy and sell things online.

This new market is going to expand the economy with the sudden need for 3D modlers and texture artists. They'll be called upon to make virtual houses of actual houses on sale in the market (if it just takes $300 for a modler to get a virtual home done for a replica of a real one that costs $42,000 on an easy to access tool that millions of people have wouldn't it be in your favor to take advatnage of this?). This will also expand to virtual retailers giving house tours.

Microtransactions will also will be what will get a lot of attention, don't be suprised to see IKEA and other powerhouse furniture makers to let users choose from their online store of real life furniture for you to use in your virtual apartment.

Buy a movie ticket and watch it at a designated time (like in real life) as the movie streams on your console (tickets will probably be more costly this way than you were to watch it in real life).

We'll also be seeing animated advertising on things that couldn't be done in the real world, this world will be very advertised - no doubt about that.

Well I lost my train of thought now, what do you want to see in a world like this. I'm not saying Home is going to do any of this, but it did just open a whole new market in the coming years.

If this in the wrong section then can a mod move it?

Default So what is the future?

I don't want to think that far ahead of what we are going to see 12-15 years from now. I think like most of us ADD minions we are looking for what is happening now. Did we pick the right system? I like wehere you were going with the thread and 2nd life is interesting to a point. Why spend actual money and time living a life that perhaps you could do physically in the real world? Thought you could say that the virtual world gives other opportunities and abilities that maybe you wouldn't have in the real world (I have an acquaintance in 2nd life making some nice cash selling virtual clothes, but I wouldn't call her a fashionista by any means), it's virtual. I don't know I guess I am trying to go somewhere on that point, but I want to know if my xbox DVD is going to be better than blu-ray in 2 or three years. Has the 360 capped? Can the graphics get any better? Can you have more than 6-8 hours of gameplay without sacrificing the image quality?

Just curious where in the US does a house cost $42,000?

This is what I think of Sony's Home

Going online to circle jerk with people and look at each other's FAKE homes is the last thing in the world I want to do. Hopefully they will have a stripped down version of this BS so people can just play games... get in and get out... not get in, play dress up, decorate fake homes, dance stupid looping animations, walk around hoping I find someone that wants to play the same game as me, and THEN play the game... just because it is a NEW idea for a console doesn’t mean it’s a good one.

This home feature actually looks very interesting. It almost made me want to purchase a PS3 sometime soon. It kind of reminds me of that online sim, I can't remember the name, I think it was like Coke world or something, and it was all based on making beats , whilst in the background, nothing but coke advertisements. Do any of you guys remember what that was called?

The future I see... a lot of people loosing themselves in a second life and not leaving their homes. Man, could you imagine having your virtual self ordering a pizza and have a robot deliver it your door? We'll have a continent-wide overweight problem dubbed Sonybesity. Advertising in your virtual space could have embedded subliminal messages so the government can further keep tabs on you as their puppet. Yes, this has sci-fi horror written all over it.

Yeah, but it was really just a matter of time. Maybe there will be an option to order those "fat pills" in the virtual world. I don't want to take anything away from Sony because if I did it would be just be stupid because I'm taking away features. But if this is any successful then we know Microsoft will have a dominating one, I mean it's Microsoft's job to think about online... Sony they like those camcorders.
