Unhappy PS3 connection problem

Guys, need some advice i've got a friend who's just bought a PS3 and wants to go online. Nows he's bought a modem/router and it's up and running he then wants to pick up the wireless signal from the modem to the ps3 (he can't go wired because of the distance) but the ps3 can't pick up the IP address it just times out. Although the ps3 picks up the name of the modem/router. Any suggestions?

If its an older modem/router you may have to manually assign an IP address to the PS3. Mine connected the moment I put in the network key and hasnt timed out since so i'm not sure if I can help you further.

Its nothing to with Vista the PS3 communicates directly with the router to have its IP address assigned. What make/model is the router?

So what your saying is we have to manually type in the IP address? Why can't they just connect automatically. I hate computers.

because computers are stupid as ****...

btw when you manually assign an IP address for your PS3, I recommend you go into your router's settings (type "192.168.1.1" in your web browser's address bar to get to it) and open up some ports for your PS3's IP address.

the ports are:
  • 3658 (UDP)
  • 5223 (TCP)
  • 80 (TCP)
  • 3478 (UDP)
  • 443 (TCP)

you sure he didn't go in and mess with any settings on the router? there are all kinds of settings in there that can block new signals or limit the port settings.
he may be able to reset the router if necessary. do you need a password to log onto his wireless setup? are you sure you have the right one entered?

I don't think any of the settings have been changed but we did think it could be the computer blocking it out for some reason.
