have sony made any changes to anything in the chip size or architecture the way MS has with the 360? or is what you get now the same design and set up as it was back when they first launched?

I believe the CPU is 65nm but that is just natural progression in the electronics industry. You cannot keep old manufacturing techniques going or they end up costing more money than investing in newer ones. Other than that, the PS3 is the same as day 1.

So the chips got smaller, because the industry moved that way. understandable. but sony hasn't refined anything else, eh? that is kind of a bummer, that if they are finding issues in release consoles, there is still the same potential to get those same issues in currently made consoles.

any rumors on them changing anything, like they did with the ps2 from bulky big to slim and small design?

Sony and Microsoft are moving to 45nm by third quarter.

It's more official for Microsoft which will be shipping the replacement for Falcon by August (illegedly)

Less news on Sony's front - just rumours at the moment.
