That may be - but I'll argue that my DVD player is probably outputting a much better quality signal than yours is.

...and please don't waste my time with DVD/BD comparisons you did using the PS3 because the PS3's upscaling is abysmal.

My original point stands: Your argument wins exclusively on films that were filmed in 65/70 mm. I'll also conceded that a DVD that was remastered 10 years ago has nothing on a Blu-Ray disc that was remastered this year...but that doesn't mean that film companies couldn't get the same results on a DVD if they chose to remaster with today's technology - which they won't because they want to push blu-ray.

Don't know if you like older films, Shane - but you should definitely get your hands on either 2001 or Lawrence of Arabia.

on the contrary, i've noticed that the ps3 makes high quality dvds look damn good, my sopranos boxed set looks close to how a blu ray should look when i play it on my ps3

i did watch lawrence in the last couple weeks. it did look really good for being an old movie. it was upscaled on my 360, but it looked better then most older movies and not so old movies look when they are upscaled. of course, there wasn't really a whole lot to show in teh desert.

That's because it has upscaling full stop - but there are far better upscalers in the market.

Remember - Sony wants to sell Blu-Ray, not DVD.

Indeed it will - that's the 70mm shining through: basically double the normal film resolution. Far and Away looks damn good as well - although you can take it or leave it (but I did actually like the film).

PS3 upscales DVDs fine. I have no complaints with it. The 360 is crap at playing DVDs tho.

I have american dad box set on DVD, and although cartoons tend to look a bit sharper and clearer on the whole, when upscaled it looks damn near HD.

did you just use American Dad cartoon as an example of HD picture quality? you know the edit feature is there for a reason. use it to your advantage.

No I was discussing standard DVD cartoons being upscaled, because cartoons have a clearer and sharper picture in general due to the colours(lack of blacks ect, and just using the main vibrant colour palet), they look very good when upscaled, on par with some HD films for clear and sharp pictures, they have a 'crisp' HD look to them. It may be hard for your fathead to comprehend but give it a go.

lmao good call

charlie whats wrong with 360 as a dvd player? I never had a problem with it. I can't imagine there being much noticable difference between a DVD playing on a 360 vs a PS3, not that i want to compare the two, but this thread like most has been taken over by the inevitable console war anyway :P

I cant explain it nufan it just looks bad compared to a normal dvd player or PS3.

Plus lets not forget the 360 is unsuitable as a DVD player in a small living space, as it sounds like a moped.

Cartoons look sweet in HD.

Just watching the Ice Ace 2 Trailer in 720p was amazing.

I own Shrek 3 on HD DVD and its crispness is magnificent.

I never use the Xbox 360 as a DVD player cause I have like 3 anyway around the house. And where my 360 is connected to my TV, it also has a DVD player connected there as well, so no need to use 360 for that.
Plus its noisy too.

i use mine all the time for dvds, never notice teh noise, and i keep the sound low, so if it was loud i would notice. but since i got the hd dvd add on, i use that for all my movies, rather then teh xbox straight. and i think its even quieter. haven't had a single issue. no, that stupid upscaling tosishiba POS i used to have, that was nothing but trouble. in fact, every dvd player i have had made by tosihiba has been a piece of crap, and i won't buy toshiba stuff anymore. (i really hope the drives in the 360 are not toshiba)

yeah ive had my 360 for 2 years and its quiet, must be just the european 360s that are noisy i guess :P Use it for DVDs all the times and plays perfectly. Would hate to have a stand alone DVD player taking up room in my cabinet with a 360 sitting there that can play them perfectly well.

I used to use my 360 for dvd's and i found it would run quieter than it would playing a game so really when watching a movie it wouldn't make any noise which was great.

Its like a moped as charles said ...with the restrictors off.

That's because you have no basis of comparison.
