Posts: 5,080 | is the PS3 region free? i know it is for games, and it's not for blu-ray, or at least that's what i've heard, but what about regular dvds? i've found some dvds that i want to buy but they are region 1 and i live/purchased my PS3 in region 2, will these dvds work or not?

Posts: 849 | Obviously I don't have a PS3 so can't say for sure, but I google'd the subject and it came back with a lot of forum posts asking for ''hacks'' so that they could play other regioned DVDs. From that search I'm gonna assume that PS3 is region locked for DVD's. Don't they HAVE to sell DVD players locked? I know you can get cheap ones region free but you usually have to flash the firmware and/or enter a code to have it work. As far as a hack for the PS3 goes from what the forum posts were saying it doesn't look like there is one available, probably it would void the warranty too anyway.
Probably doesn't help, I guess you could always try a Region 1 DVD if you have one or a buddy does and see what it says, thats the true test !
I hate regions, i have DVD's from NZ purchased legally that I have over here in Canada that I can't play. Sure I can go buy a cheap player that is region free but for the odd time that i want to watch a non region 1 it would be nice if i could do it on my 360. That was always the thing that appealed to me with HD-DVD being completely region free, unlike DVDs and Blu Ray.

| | | Yeah alex standard DVDs are region locked on the PS3 aswell, Ive tried some Region 1 DVDs I have and no joy.
And as for the fact Blu-ray is region locked unlike HD-DVD, yes it does suck. But its a major part of the reason BR won the format war. Better copy-protection and region codes.
The fact all PS3 games are region free makes up for it though, would have been sexy if BR was region free aswell though, Coulda saved a fortune. | |
