Default Blu-Ray hits back - Pioneer develops 400GB disc!!

Blu-ray discs expand to 400GB, thanks to Pioneer - PS3 Fanboy

Pioneer has just announced a major development breakthru in BluRay disc technology allowing the expansion of capacity to a whopping 400GB - almost half a terrabyte.

The implications of this announcement are huge placing as this firmly entrenches BluRay as the forerunner in transportable media. While critics are saying that existing PS3's cannot support this size - Sony has implied that the standard laser CAN read the new capacity suggesting that a PS3 could be upgraded with a firmware update.

With the recent release of a 50gb-busting MGS4 for PS3, the opportunities for BluRay may have just increased 10-fold.

Yeah but the problem is, a normal Blu-ray player can't play a 16 layer disk...so the real issue is, how can they incorporate this technology into the older players (read: PS3).

be interesting to see where this goes now.

But that is another point i never though of in defense of DLC: there are so many upgrades/advances coming out so fast with players and discs and that technology, it would seem cheaper to just be able to download your movies, then constantly trying to keep up with what can play what and which format, etc... with DLC i would assume, if you have a tv all you would have to do to upgrade your player would be standard updates, since there really wouldn't be moving parts, unlike blu ray players, which may, or may not be fixed with a firmware update.

it's kind of like console games vs pc games. console...pop it in and play (usually), pc game...make sure you got the min requirements, maybe tweak this and that for a bit, and then you can play it. (pc games used to crash a lot, but after having consoles for a couple years, they aren't saints either.)

Could you imagine teh headlines.

Sony Announces Killzone 3, uses all 400 GB of Blue Ray Disc!

Please. You know what, you could use that much space with high quality video with 0 compression. But thats not what its about, and that was what MGS4 was filled with. Poorly compressed, high quality video that coupled the majority of that space.
Its all marketing ploys by Sony.

Personally 400GB discs are nice, and I am sure will come to fruition. But, do you think our internet will increase with same levels of speed over time, to support a game download at even 200GB? I severely doubt it. Hence, a 200GB BR disc is just nonsense today, and not necessary.
The world is doing nicely with DVD now, and BR may take over as a format, over time (years), but to even insinuate 400GB discs being the standard is extremely premeture to say the least.

HDDVD FTMFW!

hd dvd didn't lose, it fell and hurt it's leg and is out of the race, but that doesn't mean blu ray crossed the finish line yet.

you know, it would be cool to use a 400 gig disk as some type of RAM device, so the compy could put swap files and what not on it. make them re-writable. 400gigs of RAM, FTW!

It is a game-changer for sure - there's just nothing on the market that can shift that much data. (at least, not for a while)

This massive increase in capacity completely changes BluRay's future for the better imo.

No HDDVD died. Are you in denial? When a product is discontinued and no longer manufactured its dead, we will never see it again unless its at a local garage sale or on ebay. With that said, blu ray is nowhere near winning over the hearts of the general public, its still mostly the video and audiophiles that dont mind dropping 30 bucks a movie. Chances are grandma sue doesnt want to have anything to do with that...in fact she probably has no idea what it is yet.

Never said I didn't think HD DVD was dead, I just said HDDVD FTMFW based on its advantages over BR.

But, did you know, that Amazon are selling brand new movies still. Just picked up "I am Legend" the other week.
