I went ahead and ordered Component cables. If I got HDMI I wouldn't have been able to hook it up to my surround sound. I was pretty pissed off when I opened my package and found a standard cable. Lack of HD cables FTL!!!

Just bear in mind that with component - blu-ray discs will downscale to 480p.
You need HDMI to access HD/HDCP authentication.

I have my systems hooked up to a stereo from a few years back, I have about six speakers set up around the room, the only hookups that it accepts are A/V cables. So I had to plug the video components into the tv and the audio into the stereo. It may be possible, but it would take too long to figure out, and I'd be forced to buy more ****.

I think you're stuck there, blu...
Trying to marry legacy stereo equipment with new digital theatre never has a happy ending. A new receiver is the only way forward, I'm afraid. Component video will be satisfactory for gaming, but if you have any intention of watching blu-ray movies, HDMI is your ONLY choice as it is the only connection that supports HDCP authentication protocol. (otherwise your movie is downscaled to 480p)

You should be able to do one of two things:
A) get an older home theater receiver that accepts 5.1 TOSLINK optical and hook up the audio directly from the PS3's optical out to the receiver. You will still be able to use the HDMI for video (provided your TV accepts HDMI)

B) get yourself an HDMI Home Theatre receiver that accepts HDMI sound (not a pass-thru) and you're in audio flavour country. As the PS3 internally decodes loseless codecs - you can bitstream the audio to an HDMI receiver with unbelievably amazing sound quality. My recommendation (good value for money) would be either an Onkyo TXSR606 or a Denon 1709 - both great boxes with top-notch audio.

that is how i currently have my 360 set up. hdmi to the tv and the optical to the receiver, since i have an older one. works fine for the hd dvd sound, but i only have right and left channels set up.

denon's are top notch, but they'll cost you. onkyo, though relatively new, i believe, have a pretty good track record...you get some bang for your buck with those guys.

Yea, right now I'm just planning on using it for gaming. I have nearly 300 dvds, and I don't plan on re buying many (with a few possible exceptions). So I'm not planning on buying any Blu Rays for a while (maybe when the Dark Knight releases). So for now it works out perfectly. I will eventually upgrade however; Christmas time sounds like a good shot.

actually - the Denon 1709 is pretty competively priced. It doesn't have some of the bells and whistles of more expensive models - but it's still a stand-up receiver.

i'd get a denon if i could find one under a 1000 bucks. you can get some sweet arse yamaha's for about 400. that is what i was looking at recently. i have on old pioneer. but since i don't use it for full surround, anything more would be over kill. good speakers are just to spendy.

i have a nice harmon kardon. It packs a punch and sounds great, but it now lacks some of the features of the newer models. its ok though, i wouldnt want my downstairs neighbor to complain about the noise even more when i turn on a movie!

shaddup ya old man and go smoke another "not ciggarrette" to calm ur nerves!!!

1709 is sub-1000, Blaster...should price in around the same as the Onkyo 606 - about $650-$700
