Just bought a PS3

So I went out to eat dinner tonight and there was a 20 minute wait. Well the restaurant is connected to the mall so I walked around to kill some time. When I passed Gamestop I decided to stop in. I asked, and to my surprise they had a few of the 80gb MGS4 bundles in stock as well as a Wii. Picked up the bundle, have yet to play much, just set up the system and redeemed my free Pain download. Now the PS3 only came with a standard A/V cable (FTL!!) so I can only view it in 480. My question is, if I buy a Component A/V cable (such as the one that came with 360) will I be able to set the display to 1080i with widescreen aspect. I can on my 360 and want to make sure the PS3 is the same.

does that thing take a standard hdmi cable? why not pick up one of them for cheap? not all of them are a hundred bucks.

i used component for 1080i viewing. i think that they can't handle 1080p.

Get HDMI if your telly takes it, the best for 1080i.

Get an HDMI cable online, they are super cheap (got mine for 15 plus shipping). Buying them in-stores is usually a complete rip-off

The only reason he mentioned 1080i in this thread is because he was talking about the component AV.

At any rate - pick 720p then.

I recommend monoprice.com (depending on your location). They have regular sales on their HDMI cables and I got 6ft HDMI shipped for about $4. They have run regular tests on these cables vs $200+ monster cables and they come out exactly the same.

I actually agree, I got a HDMI cable with my bundle, but for the MGS4 80gb console bundle to not have component let alone HDMI is a ****ing JOKE.

yeah, i assumed i would get an HDMI cable with my ps3 and when i unpacked it and there wasn't one i was pissed off, luckily i already had one for my laptop so i could switch those over until i got another one for my ps3, still a total pisstake though

If you can't see a difference - then there is NO reason to upgrade.
However, I would compare between 720p and 1080i to see if you find the progressive easier on your eyes.

Interlaced images can cause eye strain over time.

i dont know what ur lookin at, my hitatchi 57 inch CRT 1080i tv is better than any LCD/dlp/plasma u can put it up against. the naked eye can not tell the differnce between i/p. i get no eyestrain, i get eye candy!!!!
