NPD: Wii Surpasses Xbox 360 As New Console Leader In USA

Nintendo just broke word that the Wii has overtaken the Xbox 360 as the best selling current-generation console in the United States, with a 10.9 million strong install base, according to the NPD Group. That means Nintendo sold at least 700,000 Wiis in the country in June. We're waiting on final NPD numbers for all console manufacturers, expected later in the day. As of last month, the previous hardware champ, the Xbox 360, stood strong at 10.2 million units sold.

the Wii is just open up to so much more of a market than the 360 and PS3. Seems natural to me that it would surpass the numbers (actually I thought it already had some time ago for some reason). The Wii as a gaming console is crappy to most ppl on this site as we are used to quality games and graphics, where as the Wii is more of a gimmick, a kids toy that people of all ages are getting into.

It should be Wii vs Furbies or something, not 360 and ps3 :P

At the end of the day, the wii is a family solution system, with interactive games and quick casual play. Its not for the hardcore or even avid!

Nintendo will sell more of course, but its not the place to go for the best games, we all know thats Xbox 360, with PS3 coming in 2nd place for that.

We appreciate online communities, DLC, chat, you name it. The wii has none of that, and again, why does it need it, when a whole bunch of people only own wii sports? Plus Nintendo is against the idea of their family console being open to voice chat, online gaming and chat etc.

In my opinion, the Wii is not a next gen system, and hence the race exists between Sony and MS. The Wii is in its own market and thus has a different set of customers. Most should not roll all 3 together and try to compete and prove which is the best. At teh end of the day, hardware sales are great, but software is the key, and the attach rates show who is doing the best, and MS is owning all consoles in terms of attach rates for software.

Well done Nintendo on capturing a "New Market", but in my opinion, to compare the 360 & Ps3's market to the Wiis, is not reflective at all of each companys direction and position in the market.

We are gamers, and its all about the games, and thats something Nintendo is not providing its customers (at least its original hardcore customers) who now only have Animal Crossing to look forward too.

take a look at how many people who have owned a 360 or PS3 and later bought a Wii, if only out of curiosity? for everyone on here that has bought a Wii, you have only yourselves to blame. how many people have bought a Wii first, then picked up a 360 or PS3? i'd bet hardly any. so i'd imagine the Wii is getting a good push from current 360 and PS3 owners. and you may not think the Wii is a next gen, but the markets certainly overlap when there are so many that own multiple consoles. besides, they both make video games. and i guarantee you that Microsoft and Sony see the Wii as a competitor.

Sony didn't advertise it well at all, over here I didn't see one add leading up to it on any media.

If someone wasnt on the interweb much they would have no idea when it was out or what the big deal was about.

same over here. it was not advertised at all. in fact the first mgs4 commercial aired during the mtv vma's which was june 1 2008. Grand theft auto was all over the place in the states prior to release. all i heard for months was "Hey, I'm Niko" i'm my tv. i'd like to see how much mgs4 was advertised in japan. I love my ps3, and i love the games that sony produces but sometimes they are plain stupid. however i'm actually wondering if sony thought MGS4 was there system seller, or maybe they think resistance 2 is there system seller cause thats months from coming out and its being pressed to hell and back.
