Have you been waiting on Nintendo to release a DVD supporting version of the console? Forget them. One of the talented members of Team Twiizers (The same people who brought you the Twilight Hack and the Homebrew Channel) have enabled DVD playback on un-modded Wii's with DVDX.
Tons of Nintendo fanboys blah about DVD playback because anyone saying they want it must be saying something bad about Nintendo's choice to skip the Licensing fees necessary, and to them, Ninty can do no wrong. Tons of other console fanboys laugh at the lack of a hi-def format. People with Wiis but who don't have a DVD player in every room just got a freebie and don't care what fanboys of any stripe think. Or if you're like me, and your 6 year old piece of crap player is on the fritz, you don't have to blow money for a new living room player.
Quality isn't spot on in the first release. You'll can choose between skipping some frames on occasion or losing audio sync. I'd recommend skipping frames. I expect better software once the twiizers have had more time to tool around with it.
lol! This is such non-news it's hilarious. I bought a DVD upscaler for a quarter of the price I paid for the Wii and I get 5X the video quality I'd ever get on WiiWii vision.
I can understand modders getting all excited that they *can* play DVD's on their Wii - but realistically, who the hell would want to do that?

no one i think its just big news that these modders are reverse engineering the wii. i think theres alot of hidden functionality of the wii and the wiimote. if nintendos not gonna do it i'm glad there are people out there doing it.

What does being a 'fanboy' have to do with anything?
If you don't have DVD player in the room in question - buy one - they're cheap and even the cheapest, no-frills DVD player will give you a better picture than a WiiWii.
I own a Wii myself - and it does what it was designed to do well (which is Wii Sports basically) - apart from that, I wouldn't waste my time.
That's not 'fanboy' criticism, that's sound electronics advice from someone who knows what they're talking about.
Take it or leave it.

Unfortunately, for the quoted person, Rabbit is usually correct on these matters. This time is no exception. I would rather go out, and buy a BLURAY DVD player, then buy a Wii again, then Mod it. Nintendo really needs to step up to the plate, and do something serious. They haven't had a real hit since the Super Nintendo.

You asked why anyone would want one. I had already answered the question in the opening post, and so quoted it since you missed it. A: Because it's a freebie. The fanboy comment had nothing to do with you, it was in the context of the original post.

They're cheap. This is free. Considering DVDs are on their way out anyway, I don't aim to spend anything extra on DVD hardware.
Yep - start the timer. My prediction is 2018 at the earliest. Hardly any time to justify a player purchase
Don't you just love the smell of BluRay hype in the morning?
You know why people bought DVDs? -because their VHS cassettes wore out.
Now here's the kicker - the FIRST DVD I ever bought still plays the same as it did the day I bought it AND (and and and) it's more durable than a BluRay disc by nature of it's construction.
DVD's are here to stay for a while.

i always just assumed that the wii already had dvd playback, i thought all consoles did since the ps2, the wii is really weak if its latest update is dvd playback lol

It's worse than that. Nintendo won't even 'update' it to play DVDs. It had to be hacked.
i'm not sure here - but it may have had something to do with Nintendo's cost model - they didn't want to pay the DVD license basically because it would have made the Wii 'expensive''

oh nintendo. this is like when they missed the boat for online play with the gamecube. now they cut out dvd for this generation. i already knew this before buying a wii, however, i do see some sense in this crazy debate. how many people honestly, and i mean honestly, don't already have a dvd player? is it really necessary to keep bundling this feature in, it only drives up costs. i see the logic. i really do.

That's what I meant - sorry. Expensive for Nintendo, not the consumer.
im sure your dead on there. i think nintendo was going with the "everyone already has a dvd player" but thats just not the right way to think. its like fortune said its another dvd player for another room, etc etc. for a long time the 360 took over as my main dvd player because my tv only had one component hook up and i didn't wanna drop the money on an hdmi cable for my dvd player. now of course my ps3 is my main dvd player with the hdmi.
