I'm not sure how to take this. Obviously, any innovation is good news. I am just afraid that the flurry of formats will ultimately scare away the average consumer.

Seriously though - it shows that the market is looking at the convenience of shrinking media formats as a lure to adopt new transports.

It's only a matter of time before films go the same route considering mobile music and film players seem to walk hand-in-hand these days.

if bluray goes out the window i, the consumer, will boycot all media other than downloaded... i know we got lucky when dvd came around cause it took off almost asap, but i've wasted money on hd (not that much) and now that bluray is the "official" high definition dvd i've invested much more money into it and if ANYTHING short of the most revolutionary technology ever invented replaces it, i'll never buy another movie...

/rant lol a l ittle over the top i know but seriously i just want them to pick one.

im not buying anything else, until it plays real 3d ... which... is about 2 yrs from retail

and these stupid SD cards are 1gig cards with 1 album on it, and alot of extra content like pix and crap..
heck no, ill just stick to my 8gig card in my Voyager, and keep my 1200 songs, movies, and saved tv shows.

The biggest reason it could blow Blu-Ray away is because everybody and their mother has a slot reader already.

This is infinitely the stupidest thing I have ever seen. Come on. I can't even hold onto my flash drive for more then a few days at a time! Besides- The music aspect is silly. I can download music for free and put it on my own SD card that can also hold videos and Peggle or Geometry Wars.

umm.. yea.. and its easier to lose and people DO NOT have slot readers hooked to their TV's with enough capacity to play a high def movie. They dont exist.. so its another thing to buy.

the arguments are no stronger for bluray than they are for slot readers - if anything, they're less.

Everyone knows we're moving to a digital download market anyway - but once you've downloaded a film, how do you move it between devices? I have my doubts that you would bother 'burning' a disc.

sorry rab, people have been talkin all digi downloads for years. there will always be a large segment of society that will want the physical copy in their hands for one reason or another. digital downloads atleast for the forseeable future are going to remain a sideline until everyone has fiber optic or whatnot to make it a nearly instantanious download... and the crack head liberals start going after movie companies for all the "waist" from dvd sales.

I agree with you Remix - but suggest that we are on the verge of a cultural shift in thinking with respect to downloads. The idea of having a physical 'disc' may be what keeps BluRay alive - but that is quickly forgotten when consumers experience the convenience of data sharing between devices. When Mp3's first came out - many dismissed them as a fad for the young, but nowadays, you don't see too many people demanding to have a physical 'CD' anymore - and of those that do, the first task at hand is typically to 'rip' the CD into a file format that is more transportable to their various music devices.

The blueprint for the digital future of film is already written in the recent history of its music-based cousin.

you forgot 1 important part of my ideal. the download speeds. MP3's didnt take off while everyone was on AOL dialup. They took off when you could download them in a few seconds. Until DSL goes away and cable becomes the slow guy (when fiberoptic is availible everywhere) Digital downloads will be just an afterthought to those who have the speed and the tech knowhow. I'm sorry, but i dont think its going to be mainstream till kids are adults and the current gen of adults is in retirement villages.

I totally agree that this hinges on broadband speeds. However, it's not as far away as you think. Most western companies are now equipping fibreop to the exchange - this leaves the 'last mile' open for a solution. While we'd all like fibre to the house - this is extremely expensive. However, there is a compromise: DSL currently employs a high-band frequency signal over analogue that is filtered from the regular phone - the highest this can go realistically is 8MB (which is what I have now) and this is pretty quick. However, if you swap the analogue signal for a digital carrier instead - suddenly that old copper can support speeds up to 24Mbs (and possibly faster with compression)...

Now things get interesting.
