I do not see either HD-dvd nor Blu-ray winning in the end. Matter-of-factly, I see people streamlining movies from the internet onto their media player (the 360? gasp!), paying a nominal viewing fee, saving the movie onto the expandable hardrive, and getting rid of all those VHS and DVD collections to make space for something else. I see this as a much more efficient method rather than having everyone go out and buy a new player and DVD format.
I understand what you're saying, but what is John Q. Public going to use in the meantime amidst the fighting?

Standard dvds, like he reluctantly bought before, though he misses the old days with the Peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches stuffed into the VCR slot.

I wouldn't be surprised if they start biulding TVs with hard drives specifically dedicated to movie/media storage. Of course, if I were in charge of the future on a boarder scale than moderating a forum, I'd build houses with with massive hard drives that would manage everthing from movies and music to personal schedules and shopping. But that's off topic, so I will not go there.

I actually read something along what Grindstone was saying where they see streaming movies coming into play. Which would make sense I know on Yahoo it was posting some news about how movie companies are trying to jump ahead of what happened to the music industry by selling movies online which they are apparently going to start soon. So that should be interesting.

Funny you mention a TV with those capabilities there are some kinda already out. I know I saw a 50 inch Plasma from LG that had a DVR built right into the back. So like you said maybe those will become the mainstay and in the future we just download and purchase movies. Wouldn't surprise me and would be pretty cool at the same time. Probably a long ways off but definitely food for thought

consumers will be so confused about Blu-ray and HD-DVD they'll probably stick to the original DVD

I think you may have a point. If movies end up coming out in both formats, people might be confused and ask "What the hell is Blu-ray?" When people see the three letters "DVD" in the HD-DVD discs, I think they will run with that because it is familiar and proven.

Lord of the rings is a 'Trilogy' - meaning they sold it in 3 parts because they knew they could make more money off of it. The idea whether they could cram it onto 1 disc or not comes out a little redundant as they wouldn't have anyways.

Another reason right there for movie/game producers to stick with DVD's. Cheap to produce, sell multiple copies or as a trilogy and cash in extra big. Plus lets not forget extended editions at a later date for an additional truck load of income.

I still think Blu-Ray is to expensive to produce, and that it will end up inferior to HD-DVD.

It was an awful lot of $$$ to shell out for LOTR, but worth every penny!

Hey, it worked eh? After all, people wouldn't have bought them all if they didn't think it was worth it, no? I waited for all extended versions, myself. It's a good story.

I already see this happening. I tell people that there is a war, just like the war between Beta-Max and VHS. Then I tell them the pros and cons for both, and then what they can expect in terms of price. They do not like what I tell them, and then I explain about the potential to have movie sent through the internet straight to a dedicated hard drive either in your multi-meida machine or to your TV, and that they'll be able to get rid of all those dvds lined up against the wall. Thus far, this has been the winner.

They only people I hear clamoring for the Blu-ray drive are those geared towards owning a PS3. The majority of people not affiliated with gaming are very hesitant to a new dvd format (my parents still own more VHS tapes than DVD).
