Default PS3 Launch in 2007 if Xbox360 Fails

Apparently the analysts at Wedbush Morgan have been quoted as saying that if the Xbox360 fails (define fail), then the PS3 launch could be delayed until 2007! This sounds like absolute bull to me. One - the Xbox360 shows absolutely no signs of failing, and even if it did why would Sony delay another year to launch? It simply doesnt make sense.

Quote:
According to analysts at Wedbush Morgan, seemingly still unable to lay off the crack pipe, the PlayStation 3 will ship in 2007 if the Xbox 360 fails to ignite the hardware market.

We expect Sony to defer a decision regarding PS3 launch until it is able to assess the likely success of the Xbox 360, and anticipate that Sony will make its decision shortly after the Xbox 360 launch. We do not expect the PS3 until mid 2006, at the earliest, and should Microsoft fail to garner sufficient software support to gain an insurmountable lead, we think that there is a possibility that the PS3 launch will slip into early 2007.

Of course, this stands in stark contrast with wider expectations, set by Sony at The PlayStation meeting last week (albeit off the record) that we’ll see at least a Japanese launch of PlayStation 3 in spring 2006.

Sony is keeping tight-lipped on this as you might expect, though SPOnG cannot help wonder if the analysts quoted above have any tangible concept of what it takes to launch a videogame platform. The entire process is a massive undertaking and cannot be decided upon a whim, as suggested.

From manufacturing to retail, PR to third-party publishing/developing, SPOnG would assert that it’s simply impossible to maintain a transient console launch strategy as Wedbush Morgan describes.

Expect official comment from SCEI at the Tokyo Game Show in September.

Wow. What BS. These "analysts" are out of their minds. But there is a chance that this is true, when you recall all the other wild statements Sony and Ken Kutaragi have said.

No way, as Exxo knows from posting on engadget.com, a lot of people are jumping ship to Xbox 360 as the Sony hype machine is running out of steam. Sure, M$ may not reach the lofty numbers that Sony has/had for clientel, but it will definitely NOT "fail" as a next gen console. M$ has a lot of software support at this point, and I see it increasing with the success of the Xbox 360 and how well it will be received.

Small world, Grindstone. I remember you, you posted the link to the article about the PS3 and Xbox 360 hardware. Thanks for that, it was an excellent read. You should put it here if you haven't already. Nice to see you here. A lot of people on Engadget were giving me props: I didn't mean to convert anybody, I was just stating the facts. One question for Grindstone: are you here because you have converted to Xbox 360, or are you just here for the info and discussion? Sorry to go off topic.

I'm actually pleased to have you here, Exxo. When I logged on this morning and saw your account, I was hopeful that it was you because I knew you would bring good level-headed discussions to the forums. I think you will contribute well to the general ambience here.

As to your question, well, truth be told, I have owned a lot of different consoles. When the PS3 was announced at E3, with all the specs, I was a Sony fanboi all of a sudden [before then, I was just a gaming fanboi]. Then over the next few months, and reading lots of literature and opinions/theories, I began to realize that I had been duked or maybe even "punked" as that dork Ashton Cruther would say, by the Sony marketing machine.

I garnered some of my info from totalnextgen.com, and I believe Matt put a "shameless" comment up about this new website which brought me here in search of more information. So it is a little of both (and I should have been more concise), Xbox 360 all the way; feed my brain with specs.

Now to gently bridge that huge missive into the topic at hand- how did these analysts come to the conclusion that Xbox 360 would "fail"? What information are they privy to that would lead them to believe such crap?

i would have to say that the only thing the 360 will fail at is selling 20 million consoles by the end of the year.

grindstone, you were a ps fanboy? well glad to see you converted from the dark side.

anyways, there's really no way the 360 is going to fail. too much momentum. if the tokyo conference was that big, then think about what the u.s. and x05 conferences? there's too much riding on the entertainment division to have this fail. plus there's already so many preoders, the greatest launch lineup in history, the fact it is coming out up to a year before ps3, and and there's the 23 million xbox installed fanbase.

I was only a Sony fanboi for a limited time- we all make mistakes, no need to point fingers. Remember, I was a general gamer all along. I have a XBL account, it's been marginally active since 2003. I've bought 2 xboxs, one for me and another for a friend. I was a fence-sitter but now I see the light, or dark as you put it. I shall not look at Sony again until ~2010, when their hype machine starts up for the PS4, then I'll look again. No harm in that.

So, we're all coming to the same conclusion these analyst are not up to date on current developments. I think they are putting too much faith on the present Sony fan base. Launching in 2007 will definitely push consumers towards M$ and maybe Nintendo. Then, 3 years into the PS3, M$ will launch its next console and Sony will have a really bad day, over and over again. Hmm, maybe Sony just used these analyst to sort of massage the idea that they are pushing back the launch date (to fix the architecture design) and are trying to under-play the Xbox 360's impending success.

It is amazing the stuff that will come out of the mouth of bean counters. I think that Sony is started to feel a bit of the pressure from the industry. In E3 Sony threw together a smoke and mirror show for everyone to gaze at in wonder. They are constantly feeding the rumor mill on any type of hardware and or price. Microsoft is certainly taken the drivers seat in the next-gen console war by being first to market. I think that the amount of third-party support that the 360 is recieving speaks for itself. I am completly excited about the launch in November and have no fears about the product being anything short of spectactular.

Possibly... It could just be Sony trying to insure itself against the fact that they might not be ready for a 2006 PS3 launch. All they need to do is claim that the Xbox 360 was a failure (I'm sure Ken would have no trouble saying that - no matter how well the 360 sold) and they're safe.

If the PS3 had a late release wouldn't that just motivate more impatient customers to buy a 360?

Well, there's no doubt that both 360 & PS3 will sell a good amount. But why the need to regard the actual sayings of it failing. Seems like Sony thinks they got it good: to release it in 2007 if 360 fails. There's no way!
