Posts: 1,365 | Another Win for Blu-Ray Things are looking good for Sony as it has been announced that Twentieth Century Fox is choosing Blu-ray over HD-DVD as the next-generation media storage format it will support.
How does this relate to the XBox360? Well, Microsoft has been backing the HD-DVD, and it is also rumoured that a later version of the Xbox360 console will include HD-DVD as opposed to the standard DVD it currently has.
So the more people that Sony can get to support Blu-Ray (which is included in the PS3 as standard), the less attractiva HD-DVD (Toshiba) starts to look. As a worst case scenario, it might mean that HD-DVD never takes off, and the Xbox360 is left without any sort of next gen media support at all, unless MS want to jump onto Sony's bandwagon and use Blu-Ray too.
As it currently stands the top 6 movie studios are evenly divided on which format they will support.
This move also means that the "unified format" that has been touted is that much farther away, however the probably of that taking off were probably always a bit slimmer that one might think when it seems that Sony is already fully committed to the Blu-Ray format via the PS3. Then again, how hard would it be to change the media format in a console? |
