Posts: 502 | Sony sticks with non-unified online service LOL http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000813066433/
as much as I like all the systems that is just pathetically stupid. They talk about making their system the center of your multimedia experience but they still want all your online gaming to be split between each and every game?? o_O yeah great message there for unity lol yeah they can have fun signing up 15 accounts a year for whatever games they get, I'll stick to my live for online console gaming thank you very much

Posts: 502 | yeah I would imagine the backlash of bad buzz from their fans would be enough to make them rethink such a strategy

Posts: 1,875 | Oh man. If this true, Sony really is stupid. First they muff-up the system architecture, and now they're screwing up the online service by deferring to the gaming companies. I already hear complaints about PS2 online play, this cannot be a good thing. Everytime a Sony fan plays a game they'll have to remake an account (gamer tag) for that game. What a loss. I bet this has to do with cutting overall costs for the console (though if they charged for an online service, it could mean more $$). I feel sad for Sony loyalists. |

Posts: 1,098 | When you think about it though, that approach is very unlike Sony. They usually wants to own everything about everything. Putting the online experience in the hands of the game developers is against their normal modus operandi. On the other hand, it could be an indication of their inability to create a good, fast, and solid online gaming network like M$ has with Live.

Posts: 843 | well, the thing is, they won't get any backlash, because the sony fanboys love sony and everything they do. they even loved the boomerang controller.
if this is true, this is what sony will stick to, because they don't care about what the consumer might want. they'll also probably make it so the developer has the option to charge you. of course they will...

BTW, wow, i haven't seen you on for a while, glad to have you back!

I still think it'll outsell everything else though. The PS2 had the same online system and it knocked both the Xbox and the GC out in Round 1. |

Posts: 0 | This makes me laugh. Sony needs a online service, but they are putting too much on the PS3 itself. I can't get a PS3 now. If it can't bring a better online how will it be next-gen? |

Posts: 1,875 | Okay, I just went through and read all 120 comments with that article. Some good arguments, but nothing that totally validates PS3 for not having a unified online structure. The best they had was "the game developers will offer it for free", which I highly doubt, especially if the developers for, oh, MSG4 or Kill Xone 2 wanted to make an extra buck or so.
Some people argued that online was over rated or not necessary, citing that MSoft only has 2 million subscribers right now on XBL, or that there are only 43 million people in the US with Broadband- they missed the point. We're not talking only about the US, we're talking about every person in the world who could play online. Furthermore, the rate at which we are becoming connected is growing substantially. If the console does not offer a service similar to XBL, the game developers are less likely to make their own, especially for the magical price of "free".
Although this report is based on speculation (not offical Sony release), they have missed the mark, and it will cost them since Msoft has XBL, and Nintendo has promised something similar. The future of gaming is not playing against your computer, it's playing against your neighbor, cousin, friend, stranger- all located throughout the world. And Sony just missed a blossoming opportunity for create revenue. |

Posts: 0 | Where is Gamergurl anyway? Well Sony did this because they are cheap. I think it was retarted on their part. They fanboys would pay for it. If they had some type of LIVE service, they would at least have some chance to compete in online. |

Posts: 287 | This is very, very bad news for SONY fans. Even when they're desperatedly trying to make it sound somehow good on their forums, they do know that having an online service as poor as with the PS2 is a very dangerous disadvantage against Microsoft.
It's not only about having a bunch of different accounts, but also the fact that the experience will vary from game to game. Not all companies have a decent online architechture and you could experience good response from pathetic lag depending on what you're playing.
I can't imagine buying a multiplayer game for the PS3 anymore. MMORPGs, Racing Games, Sport Games (specially football)... damn. They've just made it so easy for people who likes online gamming: Xbox 360 and live are your friends. |

Posts: 286 | It is foolish choice by Sony. They either do not understand the market for online gaming or are making a choice to ignore it. It may be a simple matter of economics for them as well. Setting up and maintaining a unified online gaming service is expensive and while the Sony fan boys may not want to admit it Sony financially is in serious trouble. Sony is the market leader but with connectivity becoming more and more important MS and its new machine will certainly narrow the gap. |
