Sources say that Sony will lose close to $1 billion in first year of sales. The PS3 is expected to be retailed at $399. It will cost $491 to manufacture. Microsoft will also lose money though.

every console loses money, except for nintendo.....on the sale of the console.

big deal, except in sony's eyes, because they're already in so much debt.

Yeah, M$ is slated to lose about $76 per console, but if SOny wishes to compete, then they need to lose even more money per console. It's crazy to think that for M$ selling 1 million units, they just lost 76 million dollars. But for Sony, it'll be even more ugly. Frankly, I would hope that both franchizes are successful, as I believe in healthy competition (becasue Nintendo doesn't believe in it).

Well Nintnedo had lost money on the N64 as they also had to have a price reduction only a few weeks into releise.

It is realy only since the GC and DS Nintnedo have made cash on the hardware.

i think it is fair if nintendo chooses not to lose money...they have there own marketing strategy just as m$ and sony do too....except sony's sux...they are losing way! to much money on there consoles...it just doesn't add up

That's why Microsoft should release teh 360 at a lower price. By doing that they can force Sony to release the PS3 at a low price too, which would be more damaging to them.

Sony would need to drop the price if that was the case.
