Yeah, it's a terrible name but now that I think about it, the Revolution was quite a lacklustre name also. Sure it sums up their goals pretty well but it doesn't exactly broaden appeal. How many mothers, fathers, grandparents etc could you imagine playing their Revolution. Not many. The name Revolution only caters for the diehards who know what they're talking about. As of this time, Nintendo wants to stretch boundaries not isolate potential consumers which is what they would have done had they called their system Revolution.
Not that Wii is much better but I can see where they're coming from. They want something short and quirky that remains the same universally. I can't say I like the name but I didn't like the names iPod, Xbox or Gamecube either. It'll grow and we'll forget about it. The average consumer however may not. People are very image conscious and they won't want to be inviting their friends over to play with their Wii. |

Posts: 186 | Remember this new name came from the same company who said that gamers are not interested in online gaming. Of course, they have change views a bit on the DS.
Wii are starting to wonder how much longer Nintendo can live off Mario and Zelda before they turn to handhelds only. |

Posts: 211 | LOL! Funny post everyone. I don't understand Nintendo's decision on this one either. I also liked Revolution a whole lot better. I'm sure Nintendo's management came up with this grand ideal. Oh well, I'm a 360 fan anyway so why do I care? |

Wii are starting to wonder how much longer Nintendo can live off Mario and Zelda before they turn to handhelds only. | They didn't say that at all. They said that the general public wasn't ready for online gaming and that was when the Gamecube came out. Microsoft proved them wrong on that one but don't think it hadn't crossed their minds. After all, the GC had both dial-up and broadband access (to certain titles).
I wouldn't say they live off either. How many Zelda games have their been in recent years (that weren't ports). I count three Windwaker, Four Swords Adventures [which is technically a port] and The Minish Cap. I don't see how a company "lives" off a series with only three recent games that come to mind. Mario on the other hand is a different story entirely but even he is outsold by Pokémon. Then there's the likes of Donkey Kong, Starfox, Metroid, Wario, F-Zero, Fire Emblem, Earthbound, Kirby etc which are also their intellectual properties. This whole "Nintendo is going to turn to handheld only" argument is ridiculous. Do your research and you'll find that they've got at least $60 billion in their War Chest. Not only that, but they're one of the few companies who actually makes a profit every time they sell a console. They're not going out anytime soon. |

Posts: 575 | Confused a little. I like the fact that everyone pretty much says they dont like it. The reason, because its a goofy name. Now look at PS1, PS2, PS3, well let me write it out, Playstation. It sounds like a japanese _____ off booth in an adult store. And no one thought that was odd name. Next, the Xbox, and Xbox360. Ok, the original xbox did good, but along comes the xbox 360. They needed to put a three in there so it didnt look inferior to sony's upcoming product, so 360. Why 360, that means all you do is sit in the same spot not going everywhere and keep making the same mistakes over and over, not really revolutionizing gaming. But we all like the product and dismissed the goofy name because of the good games. Now Nintendo's Wii. Im shocked it took as long as 2 minutes before someone wrote Wii Wii, trying hard to make a penis joke that went nowhere. We all know what Nintendo means in japanese, now we must look at the word Wii. It takes a few to get use to it, in fact the more I say it and read about it, the more I like it. We all can see where Nintendo was going with it and I think it makes more sense then the other gaming systems out there. Just weird seeing that the official name is....Wii. And I think its two posts above me, when someone stated that they wonder how long Nintendo will stay in the market, let me tell you, I still have original Nintendo's and 64's, and well pretty much every Nintendo console, and they work great and never had a problem with them. If anyone know's how to build a quality console, its Nintendo. Oh well, but we all can voice our opinions, and no matter how goofy of a name it may be, I'll definately be getting one of these when they first come out.

Posts: 1,440 | Ill get one too but it will still be called the Revolution to me, I think the name Revo appeals to more people than just die hard gamers. Just the fact that Nintendo makes it appeals to casual gamers, most people wont care that its now called the Wii but its the people like us that thinks its stupid. Yeah, it will eventually grow on us but thats doesnt mean we will like it.

I can think of three games that were online capable for Gamecube:
Phantasy Star I & 2: Which went offline a few months ago.
Phantasy Star III (Card Game): I don't know if this one is still going.
Mario Kart Double Dash
My point on Zelda was a sarcastic exaggeration. I apologize that it is hard to present a tone of voice or attitude on text. Personally I love the games that Nintendo puts out for their systems. But third party games are usually horrid in comparison to the other systems. Call of Duty (which I owned on both GC and XB) for Gamecube was like looking at an N64 title. Even Resident Evil 4 looked better on the other systems.
I worry about the state of games for Nintendo past their own intellectual property. I can only hope the new "wand" controller system will support a standard controller. I'm not sure if other companies will be so enthused to put out a game on the Wii with the extra development time in consideration of this controller if they can easily develop a game on 360 and playstation.
I should mention I LOVE my Nintendo DS. I sold my PSP and bought a DS once I played one due to the gameplay. The games are innovative and unique where PSP felt like I was playing a washed out console version. But past the Nintendo games, the stylus features are rarely used, or optional in 3rd party games. I wonder if this new Nintendo controller will have the same problems.
I won't speculate on Wii using an external media card (such as Memory Pro or SD) as I can't remember the source. But I really hope they stick to the norm of an actual harddrive on this one.

Posts: 125 | I can think of another three-letter combination that starts with “W” to express my opinion on this…
In the UK at least, 'wee' is what young kids call piss, so I'd guess that Nintendo didn't do much research on that name.
Anyway, so I go to Gamestop and say, "hey, I need a couple of wii wiis?"
So now Ninny can go Wii Wii all over Sony?
As gamers, wii are not impressed.
"Mommy~, can I go play with my Wii-wii now?"
"Boy, get your mind outta the gutter!"
- bitchsmack -
Was "Douche" already registered by some other game company?
"Wanna play with my Wii?"
"It is VERY motion sensitive"
"My Wii's controller is about 6 inches long, and quite responsive to touch"
How much of the market share will Nintendo own ? Oh that Wii bit over there
Where is the console? It's that Wii little one over there
How does it connect to the internet? on WiiFii
How much does a second controller cost? A Wii bit.
So once you get the Wii, you will play with it?
Or at night…”Stop playing with your Wii and get to bed”
“Can I use your Wii because I want to see the cool stuff it does….”
Will the Black be bigger then the White Wii? Will the Yellow Wii be the smallest of the all?
Any why won't Nintendo think of the children? I mean what if a young boy falls in love with another boy's wii? I mean what kind of message will that send to young boy if he wants another persons wii?
I can go on all day long! I'm sorry but I am a Nintendo fan...but they walked right into this one.

1 of 2 things will happen: either Nintendo will change their name [read: Dolphin to Starcube to Gamecube evolution] or wii will begrudgenly accept the new console name, but in our hearts refer to it as the Revolution.
Let's call a spade a spade; the name sucks. If no one had told us how to pronounce it, I bet the majority of us would be calling it the "why". That is a huge marketing mistake. As it were, the other connotations (such as the phallic) will be present during the whole console's life. The ridicule will never go away. Just like a boy named Sue. |
