Default Is Sony's free online service a rip-off of xbl silver?

Quote:
Nice catch by Major Nelson: during their E3 presentation the Sony guys had a whole presentation about the PS3 online service, which is reputedly going to be entirely free. Funnily enough, the feature list shows a lot of things we know and love from Xbox Live Silver, and omits mentioning online play and matchmaking. So erm, they’re hyping that they are going to give you a blatant copy of free Xbox Live Silver for free, and probably will charge extra for the online gameplay services I suppose?

Watch the video for yourself here. Why do I just wish Sony would for once be honest about their claims? Just bloody admit guys that you’re jealous of Xbox Live’s success and want to copy it, you’re not making friends with your loyal fanbase if you keep lying to them mmmkay?

Pfft, I'm not surprised at all. All they do these days is copying. If they released the PS3 before the 360 and before they got info about the Rev', the PS3 would not be the same machine at all.

i hope you guys know that almost every company copies another company with something. no system would have online at all if it was for the dreamcast, no system would have rumble if it wasent for the dual shock (or was it N64 rumble pack?) the xbox camera wouldnt exsist if the eye toy didnt come out, there wouldnt be a contoller S if it wasent for the dual shock 2. just like the dual shock wouldnt exsist if the N64 controller didnt have an analong stick. all companies copy each other its the way the world works.

I'll disagree with that statement. The "duke" style was huge and heavy, so much so that some 3rd world countries were using them as formidble, blunt weapons. But also, these people were unbable to grasp the controller because of it's gargantuan size -- especially the Japanese, which was a market that MSoft needed to penetrate. Thus the birth of the S-style was introduced; to appease the masses and end the tyranny of the duke style weapon.

True, however, that one company comes up with a new idea, only to have it stolen and improved upon [see: Japan's ideas, from auto to gaming and everything in-between]. That is progress! Embrace it or poke fun at the console you hate. To each their own.

all companies copy each other. thats true but cmon sony is copying practically everything. 1) there 2 packages. just like core, premium 2) motion sensative controller 3)online will be similar to xbox live. and the sad part is all of this copying isnt much better than the original if any!

Agreed. Copying one or two things is a different story than taking elements from everything else and throwing them together and calling it your own. Look, they couldn't even come up with their own font, had to use the spiderman one-not a big deal at all, but just one of many examples.

Ok people. there is a difference between Sonys controller and nintendos. sonys just has a TILT sensor in it, which means it senses the way the controller is TILTED. the Wii controller has a motion sensor, which means it senses which motion you move the contoller (if you dont know the deifference between the two them you need to go back to school). they do two different things so why are they compared? and as far as online, nintendo is basically doing the same thing as MS is with the online service and XBLA so why is no one saying nintendo is copying? oh and the Spiderman font thats on the PS3 is also made by sony (spiderman is a sony made movie) so how is it copyed? so is MS copying sony because now that the PS3 is officially using blu-ray so MS put together an HD-DVD add on? is that not copying? how about nintendo decided to us disks with the game cube, is that copying sony and sega? sure it is, but everyone copys what popular. and MS is no different, its not like its the first time something has been copyed (SNES controller had 6 buttons, so sega releases a 6 button controller)

MS said the same thing Two year ago at E3...its not that Sony is having a online service its that their acting like their the first ones to do all this that gets on people nerves..and plus sony's service still doesnt have the same things XBL does

see if sony would say "so what we're doing to keep up with the competing market is also adding an online service" then they would get MUCH more respect from me

"there is a difference between Sonys controller and nintendos"

But where did the idea come from? Nintendo I believe. Two weeks before E3. Think about it. If Nintendo didn't have the wiimote, would Sony have done what they did with their controller? Unlikely. I realize this isn't an entirely new idea, but Nintendo's action forced a reaction from Sony.

Their controller....it was like Sony said "we'll, we tried our design (batarang) and it didn't work. Lets just take the idea that people seem to like"

I completely understand that "copying" is part of business, but Sony does much more of it than other companies. And regarding the virtual console, Nintendo was talking about it a long time ago, it wasn't a reaction to XBL Acrade.

And what else bugs me is the fact that everything is a double standard for Sony. Two SKU's for MS is confussing, but for Sony, it gives the customer more choice (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content...php?aid=11209). Gamers don't want to play online last generation, but this generation its such a huge priority. HDD was useless in xbox 1 according to Sony, but now its standard in the ps3.

Oh and "true" HD doesn't start until Sony is on the market, except only one of their SKU's will support "true" High Definition. I don't want to disslike Sony's gaming division, but I see little reason to favor them right now.

"HDD was useless in xbox 1 according to Sony, but now its standard in the ps3."

I used my hardrive alot to save music and game saves. Also the HDD was not that big on xbox 1. I don't agree with sony on saying it was useless. u also needed the HDD on the xbox to get the Halo 2 maps they brought out.

Actually the boomerang controller was supposedly never going to be used...

Kawanishi revealed to the site that the original boomerang controller was just a conceptual design, and Sony switched to the Dual Shock like design of the final controller "quite a ways back."

Also, supposedly Sony was planning on introducing the technology long before they heard it from Nintendo...

Kawanishi was asked about the timing of the decision to include motion sensor technology in the controller. Asked if the motion sensor was considered for inclusion at the start of the controller's development, he responded that Sony actually wanted to add the sensors long ago, but had to wait for the technology to progress. Responding "Not at all" to the possibility of Sony having been "inspired" by Nintendo's Wii controller, he noted that Sony had actually wanted to use the motion sensor technology in the PSP.

Ok now i have a question for some you you guys...if MS releases a handheld are they copying nintendo and sony? 360 has wireless controllers, are they copying nintendos wavebird? the design of the 360 controllers kinda resemble the dual shock, are they copying sony? having 4 shoulder buttons like the dual shock instead of 2, is that copying? yes, yes, yes and yes. they are copyed because they are liked by the masses. anything thats is successful is going to be copyed, period. PS2 had a DVD player and it was good, so MS included the DVD player in the xbox. everyone copys each other, thats how you make money

Wow, I think most of the comments from one in particular caught my attention. "Something something sony has bluray, and MS said their will be an addon for hd-dvd, is that copying, yes." Uh, no. Last time I checked those were two different media's. And Ms is giving a choice to watch hd-dvd movies. Soooooo, it isnt copying. Next their was a comment about how MS's controller resembles the dual shock therefore MS is copying. Holy crap your right! The day I got my 360 I could of swore I was holding a dual shock! You know cause they look so alike. Do us a favor, google images of dual shock and 360 controller so you can see the difference.

yeah i believe that last i checked the xbox controller had "triggers" nothing like what sony had and they didnt have four buttons on the top only two on the original xbox with a white and black button which are now used as the top two buttons but dont include the triggers.

ok obviously you can see two feet in front of your face... MS added HD-DVD add because the PS3 has Blu-ray, yeah they are two different formats but they do the same damn thing...play HD movies, it doesnt matter if they gave you a choice because they only came up with it because the PS3 has blu-ray built in, period. yes the shape of the 360 is very similar to the dual shock, the only difference is the 360 controller is slightly bigger and the D pad is in a different location and it has triggers (um which the PS3 dual shock now has, but i guess they are copying that too huh?) its virtually the same shape, just like the gamecube controller (DUH!) Look im not saying sony is not copying nintendo and MS or anything like that, but im saying they are not the only ones that copy. MS copys ****, just like nintendo copys ****. Killzone is a knock off of Halo (duh, i know that) Forza is a knock off of Gran turismo, things are copyed because they are successful.

i do believe microsoft took different elements from the dual shock and from nintendo, but they certainly weren't copying. they added their own innovation to what they saw from both of those companies and made something of their own.

...i also believe that some things that sony is trying to do is cheap marketing. taking something already available and just "porting" it to your console and calling it your own product. that's copying. that's the problem.
