Default 1up article about PS3

Some people love 1up, others hate it. They seem to play the side of Sony, but I had to sit and read the front page article "everything we know about the PS3". As I read through the massive article I came across a quote that I had to stop and think about. " Even Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi has been quoted as saying "It'll be expensive [...] I'm aware that with all these technologies, the PS3 can't be offered at a price that's targeted towards households." A few keywords in there but I would have to say its the "can't" that really sticks out. So with the president of Sony saying they CANT be offered at a price that's targeted towards households...What kind of machine are they making? I'm almost concerned about Sony's new product, but then again, I never planned on buying one. What do you guys think with that now being said by the President of Sony? If you want to read the whole article, grab a soda, http://1up.com/do/feature?cId=3148332&did=1

Basically it's going to be much more expenisve than the 360. How much more expensive? I believe that we'll find out at E3. I have no faith in Sony on the video game front anymore after that PS2 launch fiasco.

I'm not so sure i believe this. I think Sony might just be saying its really expensive and trying to make you believe its power and then lauch at a lower price to make you think your getting a really unbalievable deal. Whos knows.

If they want to sell units it can only be $100 - $150 more than the 360. It must have obvious graphical and processing superiority for it to sell that much higher. Blue-ray must become a universal format. A harddrive would probably be optional like the 360 and like the 360 I would think quite important for online and backward compatibility and saves. The main thing Sony has going for it is a huge fanbase and some great developers willing to do exclusives, but I think this gen, MS has certainly achieved better developer support.

The PS3 will succeed without doubt but I think the level of dominance they will get will be quite a bit less than they have now if much at all. It all depends on the cell processor is it really as capable as the claims if not Sony may be in for a much tougher ride this time round.

I take this article with a grain of salt....but there's some things I do know.

Sony will NOT be launching in Spring '06. If they were we would have leaks from japan about advertisements relating to Sony's console...

They aren't really building hype around the console, and the hype that was already there is slowly fading due to the company's lack of answers.

Their online service may just be a "port" of xbox live (the 1st one) at this rate with the details we keep getting.

The price, $499 easy. Unless they hold off long enough for the price to go down substantially, like Q4 2007 or so, lol.

There is one specific comment in that article I would like to pinpoint though. They fired someone for commenting that the people in the xbox360 department at sony were saying that the 360 is more powerful. "It can just do more."

Question

The reason sony is gettin screwed here is because of blu-ray. They are really taking a gamble. Cell really isnt special its just a processor just to make calculations. The gamer actually observes what the video card spits out which I believe the one is the 360 is more superior. The cell is just a marketing thing that sony is using to hype up the product. Why do we care if the cell has so much theroretical power. The developer have to work even harder to get that power out which means more monet spent on the games. With playstation losing more dominance in the gaming world it just isnt cost effective for the smaller developer to even attemp to get all that power out of it. Which is why some are moving to the 360.

You do bring up some reasonable points about the ps3. It really does come down to the gpu in gaming, but with both of these consoles, the gpu/cpu work together, so each have to pull a large workload....

I personally believe that the ps3 is imbalanced and that will work as a disadvantage for the console and the developers.

You are correct when saying that it is more expensive to develop for ps3. In fact the basic game was calculated at almost $5 million more than to develop for xbox360 (forgot the source....old article). Just the basic!

Okie I just read the article and got absolutely nothing from it. WTF, they just wrote down a bunch of stuff thats already known and listed a buncha games that have never even been seen, just announced.

Why are people so impatient, there's not gonna be anything new until E3... it's so obvious, 1UP/Ziff Davis are just trying to get attention for OPM and their site.

Don't you dare insult the Dreamcast by mentioning it in the same breath as Sony.

I agree that the article is just a rehash of the same old information that we have been living on since E3 of last year. The only thing new that I know of was the potential for Sony to have a unified online network.

Aside from that, Sony cannot price the PS3 too much higher than the 360. If they do so, then they will be alienated potential customers. If you look at the PS3, they only clear advantage it has over the 360 is the Blu-ray drive. The Cell is really a non-issue as it is not a processor built for gaming, and that is what the PS3 is aligned with; gaming. Ask anyone what a PS1 or PS2 is for; gaming. If the 360 and PS3 are showing off games that look practically identical, but the PS3 version costs more, which would you buy?

Perhaps Sony has alterior motives, but the reality is, their product is bound by name identity to gaming. And to do anything more at this point is going to hurt them financially.

Sony has put themselves in a quite a sticky situation. I definately agree that they must have a alterior motive behind all this madness of the PS3.

Sony is really screwed with the pricing. If its too high than none of the casual gamers are gonna buy it since its basically the same as the x360. If they price it too low the stock holders are gonna be pissed and there stocks are gonna go plumiting. THe only thing they can do is delay the ps3 and try to find some cost cuting strageties to reduce the cost of the ps3. Like chop all the fancy accesories the 360 included (media remote, wireless controller, headset and harddrive) YA I defined a 360 as the premium bundle since the premium bundle is microsofts vision of the 360. Most likely the blu-ray player in the ps3 gonna be crap and lack a lot of the stand alone player functions. Besides why include something only a handful of people can use anyways.

i agree with what u said about the Blue ray...all this crap about PS3 making a better online service then xbox live...im sorry buts that’s not going to happen if sony is making a free service...they cant afford that king of work loud for nothing and on there first real try at making a solid online community? ..wont compete with the second generation xbox live service when MS can improve and add ability to your console by allowing u to download free system updates..
