Default Crytek drops PC exclusives

Crysis developer Crytek is unlikely to make another PC-exclusive game because of problems with piracy.

"We are suffering currently from the huge piracy that is encompassing Crysis. We seem to lead the charts in piracy by a large margin, a chart leading that is not desirable," company president Cevat Yerli told PC Play

Yerli said that pirated games "inherently destroy the platform" and linked this to the fact that games on consoles sell four or five times as many copies.

"It was a big lesson for us and I believe we won't have PC exclusives as we did with Crysis in future. We are going to support PC, but not exclusive any more," he said.

However, Yerli dismissed ongoing suggestions that Crysis will be ported to consoles. "Crysis would have to be largely changed to bring it to Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3," he said, adding that the developer's "internal focus is not linked to bring Crysis to consoles".

That's a shame for console owners who read glowing reviews of Crytek's jungly first-person shooter and hoped to get a chance to have at it.

There is no way a current gen console could handle crysis with all it's bells and whistles turned on. you might get a facsimile of the original, but it wouldn't look nearly as nice.

You'd need more powah mcfry!

I can understand this from a developers perspective. I mean, piracy still exists on your good old xbox 360 console, but given all systems are online now, those consoles are quickly identified and bricked so to speak. The games today rely more and more to having a great online MP component (just generalising here) so what happens is more people on consoles are detered from running pirated software. So yes, compared to a PC, consoles are far safer and will provide game publishers with more larger revenue streams by consolidating their portfolios and moving to console markets.

In the case of the game Crysis, sure, dont expect a console to reproduce those visuals, heck, most PC's cant even do it on full specs, however, its still going to be darn nice. Epic games have even realised their support on consoles is growing significantly and having 19,000,000 potential customers on 360, is too hard to ignore.

Personally I support game developers moving to systems with less piracy. Otherwise, what are they wasting their time and money on. In the end, piracy hurts, and if your a PC gamer only, your starting to hurt about now.

How many of these people illegally DL'ing Crysis even have a computer capable of running the game decently?
Crytek should have put some kind of authentication, maybe not to the extreme as Valve did using Steam, but something.
