What is the best fighting game?

For my family I purchased a Christmas x-box 360.

I looked into games to get and have found lots of reviews for FPS and such so I have a bunch of those type of games ordered.

I have not seen anyone raving about any fighting games.

Does anyone here have any recomendations?

Dead or Alive or Virtua Fighter 5 are both good choices. I'd lean towards VF5 personally, but you could find DOA4 cheap because it's been out a while. Avoid Def Jam Icon.

Def Jam Icon is a really wierd game. It's like dancing and fighting at the same time. WTH?? I would go with Virtua Fighter. It looks good and has had some good write-ups.

Mortal Kombat is my favorite but that's out of the question. DOA 4 is fun and competitive, but it made me put my controller through my closet door. ^o^

Fatal Fury on Xbox Arcade is a good old school 2d fighter but AI is punishing.

Soul Calibur IV! FTMFW! The game is not out yet but I think it will drop in January 2008. If you played the previous games this one will probably be a must have. I personally don't like the 360 controller for fighting games and will probably buy the game on PS3. However, I might change my mind depending on the online component.

DoA is a good fighing game, and on top of it extremely bouncy and jiggely, it's probably the best choice.

Just about any answer will be a subjective response. Unless flash asked what 2+2 was then there would be a definitive answer.

The soul calibers were always my favorite. But i don't know if one came out for the 360. Played the crap out of 3.
Always good ole' mortal combat armagedon (works on the 360, though it is original xbox); but after playing some of the other newer games, mortal combat just doesn't flow.
