Default GameStop Chooses Halo Wars Over Killzone 2 for Midnight

I just returned from my local GameStop and had a very interesting conversation with the manager; apparently 95% of the Killzone 2 midnight launches have been cancelled, surprisingly the late-night openings for Halo Wars are still on. His guess at why this was happening was that there just weren't enough pre-orders to justify most of the stores opening. I live in a city of 250,000 and there is only one GameStop store in the area still doing a midnight launch for Killzone 2, apparently around 10 were originally planned.

This whole situation comes as a bit of a surprise considering all the talk by Playstation 3 fans about the huge pre-order numbers that the upcoming Sony exclusive is supposedly producing. I understand that times are tough financially and GameStop corporate has to cut things that aren't making financial sense, is Killzone 2's success one of those unneeded things? Considering GS is the largest video game retailer in the country this could definitely have an impact on the game's sales, especially when the same company is doing a midnight launch for the Xbox 360 exclusive less than a week later. What's the story at your local GameStop, is this something that is happening all over the country? Let us know in the comments or by sounding off in our forums below:

I'll say what I've said dozens of times already:

The first Killzone was a huge disappointment, and a lot of people realize this. Sony's just hyping this game up because it's one of their few exclusive shooters. I'm sure it'll be fun, the graphics are amazing, but playing Perfect Dark Zero the other day, I realized it reminded me a lot of those Killzone videos.

I just think the game's not everything Sony's been trying to make it out to be. Besides, nobody wants to go against a Halo title, not even Hollywood wanted to for Halo 3.

I doubt Halo Wars turned out to be a better game than Killzone 2, but it's all about the audience majority.

I can see it now. Waves of people in the morning, like zombies mumbling, "We want those maps, ahhahahahahah!"

Neither of them are really worthy of midnight release, but because of the mythic map pack that comes with the ce of halo wars, halo wars probably got enough preorders to do a midnight launch

well i'm gonna pick up halo wars, but i doubt my local gamestop will be having a midnight launch. there's only like 10,000 people in my town. When i went and got gta 4 there was only 6 people there. for sure there won't be one for killzone, but anything with halo in it...
i've only had the red ring of death three times...

It's all about marketability. Without the proper market support as indicated by pre-order volume and consumer hype, there isn't much point in running additional expenses by staying open later, longer, and putting up costly displays and expensive advertising, all for a mediocre turnout.

Everyone wants Halo Wars LCE for the Mythic DLC code. To be honest, it's the expected scheme from Microsloth.

It's because Halo Wars has the Mythic Map Pack, plus it also has the "Halo" title, and I believe more people people own a XBox 360, as opposed to a Playstation 3.

Oh so true, Sony wouldn't be doing their job if they weren't hyping things up, every game related company needs to hype up their things!
