Default Is DVD Only Enough Space?

What are your thoughts - are MS majorly limiting the potential of the Xbox 360 by only including DVD support out of the box - this would limit it to about 9GB of data per game.

I guess you can always have 2 DVD's or whaever, but still - who knows what next gen games are going to be like - if its like Final Fantasy or anything it might have hours and hours of in game movies.

I think they are as well, no one can know for certain how big next gen games are going to be. Especially the epic ones like Final Fantasy.

well you all seem to forget that the xbox360 has a hard drive see wat MS might do is have 2 dvds have some game content downloaded to the hard drive so that you dont have to switch dvds and they might even release later down teh road an xbox360 1.5 becasue there is still some talk that they may relaease a later version with the HD-DVD drive. this would not be the only rerelease of a console becasue that green HAlo XBOX that everyone bought had an updated dvd drive it ran faster and loaded faster.and when you ripped your music to the hard drive it also was about 1/3 faster.

The HDD is only 20GB big, that is very small by today's standards.

Xbox360 v1.5 is a big negative for people who have 1.0 - it would basically mean everyone has to upgrade

it'll be more than enough space, and if not, then they'll sell an attachment for hd-dvd.

maybe you can take out the dvd drive and replace it yourself with easy steps later on.

after all, they said it's future proof.

Well, the 360 will have 3 CPU's and a HDD. Let’s look at this:
You have a game that total needs to have 11GB storage. As a result, you have multiple options, cut down on graphics, sound, levels, customization, or compress the data. Well, let’s see what happens if we compress cretin information on the disk and then use some HDD space to temporarily store the info. Well, lets shrink everything related to menus and customization of characters and have 1 CPU decompress the info at all times. Well, you just cut off space.

Now, developers could always use new formats to store information on the disk and put the decompression program as part of the games pre-loading instruction.

The problem has just been solved. It's a matter of doing it, but the problems solution is now available.

As for replacing the drive or having an attachment for DVD-HD compatibility, it’s impossible. DVD-HD will be using a new laser type, an attachment in simply out of the story.

^^^

Good point about compressing it onto the disc, and then using the CPU to decompress it on the fly and copy it to the hard-drive. Never thought of that.

Could be a pain waiting for the files to be copied though.

yep and compressing data is exactly what they're doing.

the only thing i see that's a problem to it is public relations. people want to see new ideas and hd-dvd would be more of a pr move.

Don’t for get the ps3 can’t read DVDs because blue ray can’t read DVDs that means either have a 2nd drive ore a more expensive red and blue drive, or just don’t have a DVD player at all.

The way I see it the more new technology they try to cram in the George foreman grill look alike, the more technical problems, and cost increases there are.

Wrong, Blu-ray CAN read DVD media.

Will Blu-ray support playback of DVDs?

Yes, several leading consumer electronics companies (including Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung and LG) have already demonstrated products that can read/write CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs using a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical head, so you don't have to worry about your existing DVD collection becoming obsolete. Although it's up to each manufacturer to decide if they want to make their products backwards compatible with DVD, the format is far too popular to not be supported. The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) expects every Blu-ray Disc device to be backward compatible with CDs and DVDs.
This information was gotten from the fallowing site- http://www.blu-ray.com/faq/#2.4

I read that the blue ray frequency is too high to read the low frequency red ray. Well they fix the problem, obviously
