3 Red Lights for Boosty (Elite)

Hi everybody,

I am not normally one to encourage this sort of topic posting, but its me this time, and well, I am upset about it and feel I must talk about it.

I have a Xbox 360 Elite, and today, April 26th 2008, it just got the 3 Red Lights of Death.

I purchased the Elite in September or so last year. I had a launch console which surprisingly was working fine for near 1 and a half years. So I decided to upgrade to the Elite as I knew my original 360 would ultimately die.
So I did my research and made sure I purchased a Elite, complete with HDMI and manufactured after April or May 2007. Mine was manufactured on June 29th 2007.

Today, it decided to just Red Ring.

Normally I play GOW, Forza etc. Well tonight just after tea, I decided to pop in Call of Duty 4 for a laugh, and start getting back into that.

Upon starting, I was prompted for the usual update. This was completed successfully. The Xbox restarted, the game launched and within a few moments I was online in a team deathmatch.

About 1 minute into the Game, my 360 decides to freeze? So a quick reboot and all was well. It then appeared to freeze on the signing in screen at the start. So a little worried at this stage, I reset the XBox 360 again.
This time upon start up it received the 3 red lights.

First immediate thought in my mind was I haven't played 360 in days. So its not hot. Second immediate thought was I have the Elite, this doesn't happen right?

Well I was wrong, my 360 was cold, and had the 3 RROD.

From all my previous readings on PX360 site, I remembered to remove all cords, reboot system, detach HDD etc so that it can try to restart itself again.

All to no avail, its still stuffed.

So I now have all power removed from it and will try again shortly.

This is not acceptable, but hey thats what warranty is for. Its just a shame to see this happen to my ELite, given it was supposed to not receive this sort of trouble since it has better heat syncs, drives and all that other tech mumbo jumbo.

I tried to call MS, but they just closed, so I will try again on Monday.

Damn, that doesn't do much for my confidence in my Elite. I'm sorry to hear about your loss and the BAD timing of it. How come MS are closed they should be open 24/7??

Yeah, thanks for that mate. For some reason the Aussie site closes at 7pm, on Saturday. But I just went online to MS and did it all there which was pretty good actually. Saved me a hour on the phone.

I have 2 360's just got my 2nd one back from MS 2nd time it had the RROD so I feel your pain brother. Only goodpart of having 2 is I always have a back up especially with GTA being pre-ordered.

Sorry to hear boost, I still think im blessed that my launch 360 still works(barely, it wont read half my discs, logs onto Live when its in the mood and controllers dont seem to sync with it proper)

And I wasnt aware elites got RROD, MS are a joke.

PS3 FTW.

I would love to have a backup 360 Glock19, but don't think the wife let will me justify that purchase.

And Shane, somehow now I wish I kept that good old launch unit, seems it must have been one of those miracle 360's that was liked supped up or something.

Why did this have to happen now?

Well if it did this on Gears of War 2 launch, I would just run out and buy a Arcade version just to play gears in my desperation.

I do want to play GTA4, but not that much to run out and buy another console.

PS: I'd buy a 1980's Atari 2600 before joining the darkside and playing a PS3.

Sorry Boosty, so i guess it dosen't matter which 360 you have there's still the same chance you'll get RROD.

Dude that really sucks, as you already know, and I honestly feel your pain. I had my 3rd repaired console sent back to me 10 days ago, they had requested my power cord and it was not with my returned console. Guess what? I still have not got it 10 days later! It was all good I got my 360 back 16 days after I called them, compared to a month after I got the coffin last time. What else really sucked was my last console's warranty was voided so when I bought my new 1 in Oct I made sure I had a new premium made after Aug 07, because they have the Hdmi hookup and supposedly a new cooler running chip that made RROD less likely. Well i don't know if I should say thats a bunch of lies or just myths but whatever its not true. I'm just hoping my cord comes today. At least my son has a Wii, on a seperate note I got Resident Evil 0, 1 the remake for Gamecube, 2 , and 3 Nemesis for $18 at a local movie store and I have started to really get into them again. No Achievements suck though.

BTW I'm with you on the PS3 bit. I still love my 360, its really strange though, before I was married I definitely broke up with a few different girls for a lot less LOL. Got so much invested in this Xbox too. 31 games for 360, 10 of the best IMO BC games for Xbox, 3 controllers, Vision Camera,Wireless hookup, the now defunct but still best regular old DVD player out there, the messenger pad, a new Mass Effect skin and a couple different faceplates. To top that off this 360 tatoo i have wrapping around my eye would probably be a real pain in the ass to remove.

last night was had a power surge or something, and i went into my tv room a bit later and my elite was flashing 3 red lights. turned it off then back on a few seconds later, and it seemed to work... i don't think it was rrod though, different quadrant were flashing. i blame the snow.

Boost thats how I got the 2nd 360 mine died 2 days before release of GOW so went out and bought the one without the harddrive.

Thanks everybody for all those comments. I am starting to feel a bit better now. I'll just have to play GOW on PC for a bit.

Also, I am thinking as well now that I may put a note inside the coffin which will state....
"Dear MS, can my current console please be repaired. If it is unable to be repaired, I request a new console. Please do not send me somebody elses pre-repaired console. This is the console I bought and paid for and thus request it to be repaired. Many thanks"

I wonder if they will give a crap about my request, cause I dont want some kid called Timmys 360 who spilt lemonade all over it, performed numerous towel tricks on it and probably melted every single component on that 360. This is my biggest fear.

Sometimes if call volume is high they will shut down the automated phone system to prevent you from getting to a customer rep, but you can dial the International support number and get to the support center that way.

Sorry to hear that Boost, just got your message on Live. My Xbox died about 2 weeks ago and I am still waiting for the empty box. This time they decided to send it via Fedex Ground instead of UPS 2-Day Air.

After a week of getting impatient I just said **** it and bought another Xbox off a Craigslist. I got a pretty sweet deal for $300 which included 7 games. The Xbox is also a newer one with the cooler chipset (Dec 2007 dated). Once I get my replacement Xbox i'll probably just sell it.

Hopefully the turnaround is quick over there. Its usually 2-4 weeks in the states.

I may call MS tommorow again. Heres why.

I logged it all via Xbox.com etc, and it says on the site, that A box has been despatched to me and when I get it, pack up my 360, and attach the return label and send to MS.
But I also got a email which tells me to pack up my 360 and send it to MS and attach the labels included?

So do I box it up, or wait for the coffin to arrive? I found it perculiar to get 2 sets of conflicting information.

I would get another 360, but I already used that credit with the wife when I convinced her that if I sold my Pro unit, and upgraded to a elite, I'd be safe.
She wasn't too impressed when she saw the 3 red lights on the 360 last night.

Wait for the coffin to arrive. They probably meant pack it up when you get the box. Also, they should have posted you tracking number on your account.

MS sent you a FED Ex ground box? all the returns via UPS 2nd day must have been driving MS into the ground with shipping costs.

fed ex ground...guaranteed to delivery within 10 days--one way!
