Default My xbox wont turn on!!!

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. My 360 has not worked for 3 weeks. Of course it would go out right when gta4 was coming out so Im pissed! Anyway when I plug in the power adapter, the brick goes from orange to red. I thought it was a problem with the adaptor so I bought a new one. It work fine when I first plugged it up and played. When I turned it off for the night and came back the next day to play - exact same thing. red light on the brick. I figured my xbox is done (I just got this one from micro in Jan.) but I was hoping someone on here could tell me different or help me fix it. Thanks

Hi,

Here is what I found on MS site.

The external power supply has detected a fault. The power supply has several built-in safeguards to help prevent damage to either the console or to the power supply itself. The power supply will turn itself off under the following conditions:
• When there is too much current
• When the voltage is too high
• When the temperature is too high
Under these conditions, the light on the power supply will turn from green to orange or to red. Or, the light will turn off. When the power supply light is green or orange when it is connected to the wall outlet, the power supply is functioning correctly.

For more information, click the following article numbers to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Also.....
The red light may indicate that the power supply is too hot or is overheated. Therefore, you should let the power supply cool for several hours in a well-ventilated space. During this time, you should not try to turn the console back on to allow the power supply sufficient time to cool. As soon as the power supply has cooled off, the power supply light will change from red to orange, and you can turn the console back on.

If the power supply light is still red after you have let the power supply unit cool in a well-ventilated space, the power supply unit may require replacement.

Contact Xbox Customer Support at Xbox.com | Contact Support - Warranty Information (Xbox.com | Contact Support - Warranty Information) for information about how to do this.

and finally
If you have another power cord and power supply unit available, try using it to test the console. If the console now powers on, you may have to replace the faulty power cord and power supply unit. If the console does not power on, the issue may be with the console itself.

I hope this assists in at least part troubleshooting the problem.

If all above fails, send it back to MS.

Hi,

Ok, just to clarify. WHen you power on your 360, does the xbox even start up? Does your 360 show 3 red rings? Or, are you saying the console wont even start period, and the light on the power supply is consistently red?

If so, dude, just get another power supply, and count yourself lucky. Can you borrow someone elses and just test it?

The reason why, is if its just the power supply, then thats gotta be rather inexpensive to fix, as opposed to repairing a console. But for what I've read, the console doesn't appear to have a issue, its just the power supply (potentially).

DOnt abandon 360 just for that, and I am sure out of warranty repairs are probably not that expensive either (I am guessing here as well).

Good luck.

Actually hold up, I just re-read your original post, and you've indicated this is the second power supply you have. SO you've essentially tried another power supply and therefore it must be the console.

Did MS quote you at least on the potential cost of repairs?

are you using a surge protector? i know you can buy a power regulator, or something, for your equipment. basically, it keeps the power going into whatever is using it, at a constant rate, because i guess it is pretty common for residential power to fluctuate and spike on occasion. a lot of people with high end audio/video equipment use it because those electronics are pretty sensitive to power flux.

a simple test might also be to try a different outlet for your unit? if what boost posted is correct about it safeguarding to much power coming it, maybe that outlet is shot. try to find an outlet on another circuit and see if that might fix it up.

Yes I used a Monster surge protecter for years. When I received the new power brick, I used straight outlet and tried different outlets at home and my work. I think its my xbox. I called and that said they would fix it for $99. Dont know if I would want to spend the money to get it fixed just for it to mess up again when I could buy a new one for a little more. I dont know what Im going to do!

For the record, you dont have to have your xbox serial # when you call in to support if its already registered. I argued with a damn indian for 5 minutes before I hung up and called back and got help. They can verify you with phone # and address.
