Posts: 952 | Intel courting Microsoft for Xobx '720' Xbox-Scene News: Rumour: Intel wants Larrabee in Xbox 720
Exciting! And Intel has offered to take care of the thermal design (thank god!)

Posts: 220 | lol mafia. concerning the next xbox, i think i'll bring up a good point or two about the current generation. i like the fact that microsoft was involved with it from start to finish. they made and learned the foundation of their own system to maximize end product. i really dont like talking bad about another system but i will say sony sent out the guts of their system to other companies and said make it happen. so they learn with everyone else as they go along. i dont know how you could do that but the talk is, they did.
a partnership with intel seems a very natural relationship. both companies have a long, long history with each other. but intel is currently the underdog in the gpu market. they need someone like microsoft to get into the scene. but does ms need intel? honestly, probably not. intel is going to have to really make an impression at the bargaining (begging) table and what better way to do this than to not only sell the rights to larrabee to ms, therefore potentially cutting production costs in half, if not more, but also work on thermal design. an average joe like myself would look at this and say, why the hell not? here is a company practically bending over backwards to help me out. unfortunately money is money, and it's going to take a lot for ms to turn its back on current suppliers and go with a 'last place' gpu. then again, maybe nvidia or amd has something already in place that blows larrabee out of the water. time will tell.

unfortunately rotten i think your right. money is money and it won't matter who brings what to the table unless it involves more 0's than intel. look i think sony had the better technology in this gen and that has done nothing to the sales and devs choosing 360 so i'm not too worried. |

Intel is by no way shape or form the underdog in the chip arena. They dominate the microchip market. They ARE the MS of the chip arena. AMD was doing really well there and catchin up on them and making some great chipsets, but the merger with ATI has prooved to be nothing but a drain on them... even without ATI, AMD has never been in a position to overtake Intel for the long term.
As far as the GPU goes, sure, but if it can convince MS that its atleast comperable to the other suppliers and at a reduced cost with ease programming, then they may just go for it. Keeping that console price low is very important (chek the diff between the sales of the "weak" Wii and the "all powerful" PS3 for comparison!)

Posts: 220 | i should have said console gpu's. my bad. there was a time when you bought a pc or laptop, it ran windows and had intel all over it. it still holds true what, 98% of the time? but what is the ratio in consoles? i actually have no idea. hopefully someone can straighten me out because as far as i know, no console has an intel gpu inside.

I dont know of an intel GPU besides the one they are mentioning in the article, period. They are new to that game, unless you count all the intel boards with proprietary onboard video, but no cards that i know of.
Again, though, in the end its all about, power/programming/ and cost. I dont think MS cares as much about name recognition (i dont think they care at all because it distracts from their name brand) as much as they care about those 3 things. If intel can convince them they can deliver on those fronts, you will probably see Intel GPUs in the next 360. |

Posts: 220 | the cards were what i was initially referring to. i just did a quick post before work, i should have been more specific. but i totally agree with your argument of power/programming and cost. if intel can provide the stability ms needs along with the other important factors then i for one wouldn't mind seeing that little 'intel inside' sticker on the next xbox. it almost seems like it should be on there in the first place.

| Nail. Head. Hit.
..and Sony should take note unless they want to get flattened on the next generation of consoles...
'cause MS DOES take notes and they won't be making the same mistakes twice. I was just watching a programmers seminar on console trusted security (for example) where MS has given the X360 excellent encryption and firewall capabilities for developers to use. After some research into the PS3, I've decided that if I ever get one - it will have to be isolated on my network because hackers could use it to gain entry to your PC and personal info.

Microsoft's experience exceeds every other console maker- Microsoft makes computers for god's sake. I want to see both Sony and Nintendo be contenders next year.

Posts: 203 | And as for a lack of firewall on the PS3- that is just dumb. Rabbit is right, Microsoft takes note, and they won't make the same mistake twice.

Posts: 952 | For the record - Nintendo is the weakest link on anyone's home network. Luckily - it doesn't really dwelve into fire sharing.
My advice -make sure all other devices are firewalled against your Wii.
