Posts: 542 | Well it IS a power adapter, I can tell that for sure. The only problem, is that it's larger then any other adapter I've seen for a system yet. Microsoft had the power adapter built in to the Xbox 1. Then, they had that problem with the power cord recall. Which may or may not have anything to do with the built in power in verter, but signs point to yes.. Maybe this is to prevent any future possible over heating. In adition, to reducing the system case size, and cost.
It's possible, that it's an extra large size, for testing purposes. The machine does have a yellow (possibly a warning) sticker on it.
The cords coming from the front, have break-away cables, there the controllers. Also, you can see their shadow, showing that they keep going out straight word. When the power inverters cord doesn't come near either controller cord.
EDIT ADD
Having the power inverter on the outside is a good thing, IMO. If something is to go wroung with your system, you want it to be an external fix. The power inverter is probably one of the most likely components to go out on us. I'm glade it's on the outside, but the size is massive. The PS2 slims inverter is on the outside, but it's pretty small. (so are all nintendo console inverters)

The hamster is in the inverter, it's to help out the electric bill
Does it not explain everything?

Posts: 723 | From the size, it might be a small UPS to save all current data and safely turn off. Like 30 seconds in case someone actually uses the memory card and also enough power to support the HDD for saving quicker.

Posts: 1,098 | I'm not sure if that really is the power adapter or not, but what M$ could have done was move the power supply to the external adapter to save space inside the console, thus making it pretty large.
