Default procedural synthesis

this is probably the most exciting thing about the xbox 360's capabilities.

the ability to compress data to increase speed.

but it's more. it has to do with procedural landscaping. imagine a game where everything is rendered procedurally, not just the landscape or an object.

as my friend gamemaster asked: "How do you create a realistic forest of thousands of unique complex trees from only 45 polygons?"

... now take that concept and apply it to the entire game world or worlds.

this is by far the most exciting piece of news, albeit old news, that i have read about the xbox 360. enjoy!

yes, i know it's an old article, but please, i'm trying to gather all the information that i can about the corelation between procedural synthesis and procedural landscaping.

and as soon as the gamemaster is finished with his synopsis on this, i will post it in this thread.

Yeah, I read that good article back in the end of May. Still a good article and not too techinical either, so the near average reader can understand the concepts presented.

Looking forward to the "gammaster's" synopsis.

Yeah I’ve read this article a wile back too, but like your fellow readers said, it’s still a good one.

It looks good for MS, but I don’t think that the first generation of games is going to use this new resource yet. Chances are that after the developers pushed the hardware to its limits, that’s when there going to use the new technology, ore just maybe when the demand of the technology increases for multiple massive worlds, if that’s the case then maybe in a year or 2 after the console fist comes out.

What really impressed me is the idea that a gaming console will be able to make its own animation from scratch, by only using a few poses for any object u wont animated, from the simplest things like, moving grass, to the most detailed thing like a group of people dancing in the middle of a windy forest.

Just the idea of multiple worlds full of divers landscaping, people and even creachers, will change peoples notion of what limitations games have. And if u think about it, this new technology will allow the artists, programmers, and the developer as a whole to create their dream games, without any barriers, to stop then. MS really did make a console that lets the developers make the games they really wonted. Now the only thing holding the artists and visionaries back is their own imagination, not software or hardware.

exactly. finally we can see the developer's real imagination without the limitations of the console hindering it. procedural synthesis opens up a new landscape of ideas, thought process, and innovation.

i think this will be the key winner for the 360, because the ps3 doesn't have enough logical general processing to pull it off at the scale the 360 can.
