Question Fan still runs when Off ? ? (Charging too)

First - I searched for this topic and keywords before posting.

I too noticed that the unit gets extremely hot.
My Mod:
I have take 4ea 3" fans from Radio Shack and mounted them at angles at oposing corners of my Entertainment Center (approx: 5" away from the unit) pointed straight at the unit from Top Down. So I have plenty of air blowing across the vent holes from Top for the forward vent holes at the HD and through the ones on the side. (Unit is Vertical by the way) I have not experienced any lockups after 2 hrs of play. I hope I am covered!

Have played it on and off for 2 hrs at a shot with no issues, but one.....

The first time I plugged in the Plug - Play Charge kit the controller started to charge with the unit powered on. I played with the other wireless controller and left the tethered one sit to charge. Everything seemed to be normal. I turned the unit off - and then I noticed a Hum....... I put my hand on the unit and you could feel nothing - no vibration or anything. So I ran my hand across the back of the unit..and noticed the heat coming out of it - and noticed the FAN was still on. This reminded me of a feature that most Video Projectors have. When you intially turn the unit off.... the fan stays running for a period of time to cool the lamp. Then it powers itself off. During this time the Controller was still Red (which means it was charging) I thought no biggie, it's just cooling itself then it will be done. Went and grabbed a Mich Ultra (Yumm) then walked back by and poof the Controller red charge light was off, I placed my hand behind the unit and felt no more air. Done.
The next day - played for 2 more hours and got done turned off the 4 fan remote system I set up..... then went about my business. Well some 35 minutes later the FAN is still freaking running and the power is VERY VISABLY OFF. No green on the unit what so ever...no disc tray power (doesnt move) nothing...but the fan in the rear is still kicking off heat. The remote is still red as charging so I know the unit is parsing power to it.

I have searched support.micr$oft for this and XBOX support and RTFM (Read the F**ing Manual) and see no mention of a cool down period required.

Is this happening with anyone else???
HuH?
Or is this my starting symptoms of future things?
I dont know what else to do to cool this freaking thing off - I do not have a vertex of air going back and forth in the entertainment center either the air is exiting the rear of the cabinet fully - so I know it is not a cramped space issue - Trust me I have PEDESTAL'd this dang thing from LAUNCH DAY 1!

this happened to me last night, i was doing the same as you (charging one of the controllers while playing with another one)... i think the system recognizes that the plug and play thing is hooked up and the system stays on until the red light goes off on the charge kit when hooked up to the 360. Again, i'm not sure and have to solid facts to refer you to from MS, but i think it's just that the charge kit is hooked up because any other time i just shut the system down without it hooked in it turns off completely.

@icspeedracer

Ok - so I understand that the unit charges - but how come it didnt the first day? Just a wierd thing?

It only happened on day 2.

So I guess it's no biggie.... but is the charging throwing out that much heat still? and how long does it take to charge the unit (battery) totally.

Just all of the posts on Heat and Crashing has me nerve racked!

@Nathan and Jack Smith

I do not wish to Scare anyone as I have 3 Original Xbox's and have never had a problem 1. And not 1 yet with this....... I too like Jack Smith am getting caught up in the SCARE thing. On other Forums it is running wild...but this form seems to be the most unbiased and factual, So I take the posts a little more seriously other than the threat of a PS fanboy just starting rumors.
AGAIN - I STATE = my unit has not locked up or crashed!

But reading the threads on the Heat Issues - makes me concerned only after I noticed mine being so HOT! So now the posts I read hold weight in my opinion - as there could be a heat issue.
I was just curious about the behavior - cause now it has been 2 1/2 hours and the unit is still on and Heat is coming from the rear...not too much but just enough to know that the unit is doing something. I have re-read the Rechargable battery info papers and the plug and play papers and just didnt see any info on whether or not the unit charged even when off - STRANGE I feel, and how long is the total process?
If any one has any other info on this subject just let me know!
And if a MoD thinks my posts are just to make people crazy then delete it. I am just posting to have the Guys in here that I trust give their honest opinions on it!

If anyone is going to buy one ........... DO it! The Xbox 360 is GREAT...
If I get a Production facility going quickly I would design a Cooler unit for this unit. I am already making a custom one on my work bench in my garage.
It is a raised Box with Twin 4" Fans 60cfm and a back splash that houses 3 in line 3" fans to assist with pulling air from the rear of the unit. This coupled with the 4 in all four corners above the unit should be MORE than enough air flow to push air across it for cooling.

If anyone has anyother ideas to implement a cooling procedure then please let me know as I am game..however it can not imapct the warranty or modify the device at all.

Thanks for reading.

SGT - yeah i don't know why it didn't do it on day 1 for you... the first time i plugged in the charge and play kit my 360 seemed to sound like its on if the charge kit was going... I don't think charging the contorllers take that much power, but i would have to think that the system is sort of on thus the fans go on too. weird yes, but as someone mentioned you can just plug the thing into a pc usb port and be good to go if you get overly concerned about the 360 fan noise when it's charging and not playing. this isn't a defect IMO, it's just how the system works.

Default Interesting info

I do not own the 360 yet and I agree that I have seen alot fo forums with issues but then I have to wonder which are true. It seems this site is better on it.

Looking at the Xbox360 website the following is written:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x...360theguts.htm

It talks about the cooling of the system during intense gaming which uses alot of power and then DVD function does not use alot.

Interesting thread...yes I would have to recommend a warranty also, just in case.

@ ChiTownPlayer

Yep - bought the warranty just in case!

The unit is working great. I have used it max at 1 time running for 6 hrs with no hiccups or problems.

I just wish the documentation that came with it was a little more Informative. So I didn't have to post this thread. But now I use my PC's to charge the controllers.

So if anyone reads this DONT worry! It's supposed to do that!

if you plug the charegr in with the 360 off it will remain off. If you plug it with 360 on, it will charge. You are not having an issue (other than heat)

When I bought my Original X-Box in 2003 it came with a 30 day warranty. I always ran perfectly until I got the faulty power cord warning in the mail and had to call in for the free improved cable so my x-box would not burst into flames. Or to use the public relations term, "suffer from a thermal event". Anyway My X-box always worked PERFECTLY but now I'm reading all this about the 360 being unstable and crashing and overheating and crashing. And i'm a bit wary of buying one, I was at a local video game store "Babbages" they are partnered with Gamestop and a few other stores There was an loudly complaining guy there picking up his 3rd X360 in less than a week because they kept crashing and locking up refusing to function. I'm freaked out and personally won't buy one until I hear that Microsoft is fixing the problem and not playing some "let the buyer be ware" game using an out of the box 30 day warranty excuse. I don't expect them to do that but it's always possible. Seems like the best way to cool down the unit is have a fan on one side pulling room temp air into the case and then another fan on the other side pushing out the warm air. If you're one of the people buying extra fans and mounting them externally you might try to use some masking tape "easily removed when your're done with it" to attach another cooling fan to the outside of the case with an external powersource forcing cooler air into the unit through the intake vents then the fan thats already inside pushing the hot air out has an easier job and the unit runs cooler. I once modified my old PCs cooling system because it was running hot with all the harware I had in it... I cut 2 round fan sized holes in the top of the case and mounted 2 cooling fans there blowing upward.. and I flipped the internal fan a around so that there was an air intake on the back of the case. I ended up with the case having it's air intake on the backside at floor level and then the 2 cooling fans on top pulling the hot air out and pushing it up and away from the unit It worked excellently even though it ended up looking a bit like frankenstein's monster.

im thinking these aree just isolated incidents because i have really worked in my 360 this first week and have had no problems, gets a little warm but nothing too serious, at least its not summer, people that live in hotter ares should prob invest in a fan unless they want to use it as a $400 toaster
