Thumbs up Another VGA question...

Hello everybody!

I kinda have a good idea of how good Xbox360 is gonna be on HDTV's but how good is it gonna look on a monitor via VGA? my screen is a 17" with a res of 1280x1024.

Just wandering if anyone knows how the scaling works? will the monitor run 1080i ok, but just cut off the top and bottom? or will it scale the image to my exact native res?

I know I shouldn't worry about this, but when the Xbox360 is in my sweaty mitts. I wanna make sure it works!

It will work and probably look alright... Just like on the first xbox, on the 360, you should be able to enter the setup mode and change your display resolution.

I think the VGA adapter supppports 480 720 and 1080.
720 is 1280x1024 or something like that so the picture is gona be allright

Cool cool, will the picture have to be in widescreen or will it just auto size to fill my screen?

720p is 1280x720 lines in progressive scan hence the name 720p. so if you connect it to your monitor, which has the native resolution of 1280x1024 the monitor will have to run in a resolution not optimal to it, (720p) so it will look blurry. (if it is a lcd monitor that is, if its a crt, the picture will be as sharp as always)

I found this on a site, not sure about the source but seems good...

Question: Will all Xbox 360 games support the HD format?
Answer: Yes, Xbox 360 will be the first consoles to have all games support the HD format. All games support a 16:9 aspect ratio, and a minimum of 720p resolution with 2x full-scene anti-aliasing enabled. The embedded Microsoft web-tv chip is able to automatically reformat 720p to the best available display resolution including 480i, 480p, 1080i as well as dynamically crop or scale 16:9 to fit 4:3 screens. Some games will optionally support native 1080i and 480p video resolutions as well.

So by this I guess everything should be crisp and also fill the screen!

I have a 19' LCD monitor that has a native resolution of 1280x1024. I really hope it doesn't expand the picture horizontally to use the whole monitor, cause that would suck. My hope is that it will just leave the top and the bottom of the monitor blank and draw in widescreen, because 1280x720 will fit into 1280x1024, it's just a matter of whether or not it stretches, which I hope it doesn't, or else I'll have to buy a HDTV and just hook my 360 and computer monitor up to it!

paulbabbitt, what kind of monitor do you have, LCD or CRT? Or, is it really fat, or is it thin? Also, does it have VGA input?

Anyway, here's a general question. With the red/white audio RCA plugs that are also on the VGA adapter. What are you doing to get audio. I live litterally in the middle of nowhere; so the second largest city in Alaska, which has almost nothing. I live 40 minutes from a GameStop, and that's it for video games. Anyway, when I was on a tennis trip down to Anchorage, I made a nice custom adapter that takes Red/White RCA input and converts it to a Computer Speaker jack(3.5mm). Then I went and bought a decent set of 2.1 Logitech Speakers. The quality is definately worth the $50 I spent.

do you know the size and maximun resolution of it? (you can find out the max res by right clicking on your desktop, selecting "settings" and then chosing the tab that is also called "settings". then move the resolution bar as far to the right as it can come.)

I'm gonna get a 2 Phono to 3.5mm jack adapter seems pretty standard stuff.

You would think that would be easy to get, but I had to travel 300 miles on bus just to get the supplies to make a custom one of those. Yeah, I live in Alaska, that eplains everything.

Well I have a 17 inch LCD screen but it has no VGA inputs, only an output one for the pc.... Can I still hook the 360 with my monitor using one of those adapters that join two vga cables to one ?

Default can anyone help me

My son has the 360. He needs a new monitor. Right now he's using a tv.

I saw this monitor, http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...37802%3A110915

Can the 360 be connected to this monitor? If so what cables would I need to buy? Does the 360 cable we use now, which has 6 RCA type plugs at the opposite end of the xbox connector.

Thanks

Hmmmm, seems like it is only using a DVI input. Ideally you need to find one with a VGA connection instead. Then all you need to do is buy a VGA cable and Bingo!

Don't worry about finding monitors with phono inputs, you won't find one.

On another note, any feed back from the USA on how the 360 perfroms on a PC monitor?

Thanks so much for your help. If I buy a vga cable, do I need a specific end plug that goes into the xbox 360?

This monitor at walmart says this comes with it:
and get DVI digital link, DVI and VGA cable included and a 500:1 contrast ratio.

Do you know if this is the cable I'll need. The xbox 360 OEM cable has a large plug that goes into the xbox itself, and then 3 rca plugs and what looks like another set of 3 rca plugs.

Sorry for being so non tech savvy with this. I appreciate your help.

Yeah the VGA lead you can buy, just plugs into the 360 and the other end into your monitor. It's an official job so don't worry about that.

The 360 will know what you have plugged in and make the correct adjustments.

The monitor sounds ok.

I've found this monitor at Amazon and it says it has

Input signals: Analog RGB
Input connector/cable: 15-pin mini D-sub

Is that VGA also? This is so confusing. Thanks for your advice.

I have some answers to some of your questions :-) Yes, the Xbox will automatically stretch the image to fill the screen on your monitor, it's pretty ***. BUT Microsoft WAS smart and included everything you need in the case. You get the cable plus a female to female vga adapter AND a RCA to mini-jack adapter. So that's covered.... I haven't used it much cuz it's a hassle for me to unplug the monitor then plug it back in. But when i did try it out, i only played one level of PGR3 at night and i wasn't very impressed. I tried multiple resolutions didn't see a difference in any of them. the colors did look a little washed out like the brightness was set too high, i'll try it out again later on a different track and with some different games. And maybe a different monitor.
