OK, if you have a hdtv and go one hundred meters away from it then look at it, what will you see? Well, you'll hopefully see a dot.
As you would imagine, you can see the greatest detail on the screen if you get as close as you can to the tv.
Hence, if you start to move back, the picture will appera to degrade the further you go, until you get to a point where the resolution on your HDTV will look like that of an SDTV.
What is this distance?
Well it depends on the size of your TV, the average resolution of the human eye and the distance you are from the TV.
I've put together a calculator which will work out how far you have to be from your screen, before the resolution of your (720p) tv looks like a 480 tv.
