Default Intercooler Problems = Red Ring?

Well, I hope this isn't a sign to come, but tonight when I turned on my 360 the Nyko Intercooler fans made a horrific noise like a fan was about to exit the housing! The next thing I know, red rings are dancing on the front of my beloved 360! Sector 4 lights up and error 68 appears on the screen. From what I can tell, this means a possible HD failure. Anyway, I immediately shut it down and removed the Intercooler. I fire it back up and it works fine now...no noise, no red lights. Played flawless for the rest of the evening. I don't know if this is related to the fan...I just hope this isn't a "sign". I'm glad I bought the extended warranty!

Its the fan. I don't understand why people use those, I think they cause more harm than good. The fan runs directly off the xbox 360 powersupply. The thing about the xbox 360 is it monitors power usage and if the wattage that gets to it dips below a certain level it would trigger a system error. The only thing I say is return the cooler and only use it if your xbox 360 freezes due to it being in a hot environment. Use the money on something worth it. Horse Armor anybody, Jokes.

Well, I uninstalled it and have been playing all week with no problems. I did find that one of the three intercooler fans was indeed bad...which was causing the noise. As for the error....who knows. I'll keep playing it this way to see what hapens.

The error is from the power cord. When you install the cooler and then plug in the power cord, it sticks out a little from the cooler. That is where your problem is from. My friend got the same error. It is the addon. I suggest not using it at all.

I agree with one of my friends, we both think its a bad idea to hook some into the 360 power supply.

Well, I always believed that "the cooler the better" and I was really happy with the additional fans, but when they started making noise and eventually went south, I changed my mind about this particular product. I won't risk it by putting on another one. It worked great for about 2 months. Oh well. I still have my box horizontal on four 3/4" coasters and a 4" fan blowing over/under/around and into the intake vent and power supply. I'll just see how it goes, but so far so good. Thanks for the replies!

its not the cooler, John hit it on the dot. The cord isn't pushed in fully and it does that error. It happend to me 1 time and thats it, I hadn't plugged the intercooler in fully and it wigged. The intercoolers fine, its not gonna blow your system up.

I think that your 360 will be fine. I think that putting a 3rd party gadget on a 360 is not good. You are messing with the power supply - not a good thing. I say if it is not messing up then dont touch it.

Well see, I was playing Oblivion and the high demands of running that for a while like screwed it. It was freezing up and lagging and then it just froze. My disk got scratched and it was never taken out or tilted in any way. It disk got extremely hot and slightly warped causing it to touch spots it normally wouldn't. Since the addition of the intercooler, I haven't had a single problem so...I'm happy with the $20 addition.

Mine has been having the same problems everyonce in a while. It seems to be a temp problem with the fans and, like mentioned earlier, the power cord not being properly seated on the intercooler. After about 5 minutes of running the fans stop making all the noise and are pretty quiet. I've had mine for about 3 months and it started all the noise within the last month. I really don't think it is causing any real problems and like what poeticpyro said, it really helps out when playing oblivion for extended periods of time. Without it I usually freeze up within about 2-3 hours of gameplay.

Yeah, my point. Obvlivion takes a lot to run. Thats the problem I run into, about 2-3 hours in its starts lagging up and then it'll just freeze. The fan really really helps if your running high demand games such as that or just extended periods.

I have played Oblivion for many hours straight at once and have never had a problem with it lagging or freezing up.

Well, so far so good. I'll just keep it the way it is for now. If I remember correctly the reason I bought it was because I was freezing on Oblivion, too. I havn't played it since my fan incident, so maybe I'll play it this weekend for a while to see how it does. One of my fans is bad though, you can hear it make noise when you spin it and it spins freely. So the errors you guys are getting go away when you reinstall the intercooler and are caused by a poor connection? Thanks for the input!

This may sound stupid...but I bought a really little fan from office max
it makes no noise and I have it facing backward to pull the heat out.I
haven't had overheating issues but my 360 was getting really hot so I wanted to do something and it works great.

That doesn't sound like a bad idea. As I mentioned before, I have a small fan blowing into the intake....I suppose another fan sucking out the exhaust wouldn't be bad at all...and neither of them would be connected to the box.

for the people that are worrying about the usage of power from the fans.... well you obviously don't know anything about fans, as they draw next to no current whatsoever.

I also have then NYKO intercooler. I do not know what happend but everytime I play a game now i get about 5 minutes into it and it freezes. There is nothing but a checkerboard on the screen. I thought it was the power supply but it shows green and it still happens even when the HD is disconnected. Now I get the Red rings every other time I even turn the 360 on.THis didn't happen befor I bought the intercooler so I am putting 2 and 2 together. It sounds like a great attachment for the 360 but if this happens no one should take the chance. I tried to return it to EB games beause I have the extended warranty but I lost the receipt because I bought it like 5 months ago. So II wasted 50 dollars on the warranty and EB games officially sucks cause they don't keep any record and the guy who sold the warranty to me told me I din't need the reciept. But luckily I called microsfot and they are sending me a cofin for my 360 and I should have a new one or a repaired one in 1-2 weeks. I hope this helps every one.
