Newbie question about Xbox Live

I will soon be purchasing an Xbox 360 and I had a question about Xbox Live. It will be about 2 weeks to a month after I buy the system to where I will be able to go online with it and participate in multiplayer because I need to hold off a bit before buying the wireless adapter for it, not to mention learn how to play the system well so I don't get pwned.

In the mean-time, I will be playing Halo 3, Forza 2, and Marvel offline in single player. My question is this, I know that the Xbox 360 comes with 1 month free Xbox Live Gold, I wanted to know if I could hook up my Xbox 360 to the LAN and set up a silver membership at first so that I pick my gamer tag and so my gaming achievements are associated with that tag without activating the 1 month free gold membership right away and then later decide to activate the 1 month free gold.

No, I don't believe you can choose Silver then hold off the 1 month. As far as I remember, it was: You set up Silver > Hey here's a 1 month gold free > Cheers! There was no middle ground in that you could decline the offer.

But what I do remember before the 360 was launched is that you could reserve a Gamertag from Xbox.com | Xbox.com Home and then just assosiate it with your 360 when you get it set up -- transfering your Gamerscore, I presume.

Ah ok, so if I create the gamertag on xbox.com, I can then associate that gamertag with the system so I can accumulate accomplishments and then when it comes time for me to go online, I can start up the free 1 month gold membership?

i may be mistaken here but i dont think that option will work for you either. Before i got my xbox i made my account at xbox.com. Then when i went to associate it on my xbox i was not given any option to get my 1 month free of gold. It was a silver account and my only option was to pay to start the gold service. So i had to make a new account straight from my xbox to get the 1 month free, and like Scot said you had to take it right then and there, couldnt put off using the free 1 month of gold.

I even called MS to see how im meant to get my free month of gold on the tag that i had made at xbox.com, and he said that you have to make the account on the actual xbox to receive that.

DOH...ok. So my next question is if I were to play single player games before creating a tag, when I finally do create the tag will my accomplishments that I have achieved before creating the tag show on the tag or will it start showing from that point forward?

We tried to upgrade my friend's offline account to a Live account, but it created a new one for him. You'll probably start from scratch if you try to upgrade later.
